Migrator Tool not working

QB 2019 Premier: I am trying to move to a new computer. I was able to get the Migration Tool to run on the old computer and finish the process of placing the data on the flash drive. On the new computer, I run the Move_Quickbooks.bat file and it pops up a Windows User Account Control window. I then select "YES" to allow it to make changes to this device. Then the UAC window goes away, but nothing else happens.

Any idea how to get the migration tool to run on the new computer?

Re: Migrator Tool not working

Hey there, @SPH1,

Thanks for joining the Community. I can share some insights about moving your company file to a new location.

Just to make sure I'm on the same page with you, after you run the Move_QuickBooks.bat file from your flash drive, did you get a prompt to enter the password you created? Any information you can share is extremely helpful for us to narrow things down.

In the meantime, you can re-run the .bat file and see if the same thing happens. Please note that the duration of the migration will depend on the speed of your computer and internet, and the size of your company file. You can get the steps here: Move to or reinstall QuickBooks Desktop in another computer

If the migration tool does not work for you, you can reinstall your QuickBooks on the new computer using the manual download. Just make sure you have the most recent back up copy of the company file.

To download the program on your new computer, follow the steps below:

  1. Go to the Downloads & Updates page to get the download link.
  2. Enter your CountryProduct and Version.
  3. Click the Search button.
  4. Select the Download button.

Next, you can proceed with installing the program. You can get the complete process in this article: Installing QuickBooks Desktop

Once QuickBooks is installed, you can now restore the back up copy of company file from the old location to the new computer. Here's how:

  1. Go to the File tab.
  2. Choose Open or Restore Company.
  3. Select Restore a backup copy, then Next.
  4. Choose Local Backup, then Next.
  5. From the Look In drop-down, choose the location of the backup file.
  6. Click the backup file from the folder. The file name should appear as [Company Name].qbb.
  7. Select Open, then Next.
  8. From the Save in drop-down, choose the location where you want to save the restored file.
  9. In the File name field, type a new file name.
  10. Select Save.

If you keep getting the same issue, I'd recommend following solutions outlined in this article: Using the QBInstall tool

Please let me know how it goes by leaving a comment below. I'm here if you need further assistance. Have a good one!

NO. There wasn't any opportunity to enter password. After selecting YES from the User Account Control pop-up window, the UAC window closes, but nothing else appears to happen, even wait several minutes.

Re: Migrator Tool not working

Thanks for the prompt response, SPH1.

Allow me to step in for a moment and provide some additional information about the issue.

I’ve looked into this further, and it shows that there’s an open ticket about the Migrator tool not working (INV-29060). Our engineers are all hands on deck finding a solution to get the installer to run seamlessly.

I want to ensure you’re in the loop about the progress. To do this task, we’ll have to verify the account first for security purposes.

Since we’re unable to collect personal details here in the Community, I suggest contacting our Technical Support Team.

They can include your company to the notification list to receive email updates. You can reach them by following the steps in this article: QuickBooks Desktop Customer Support Team.

In the meantime, download the installer link here:

This should help you get back to business in no time. Keep me posted on how things go after calling our support team. I want to make sure you're all set with this concern.

Re: Migrator Tool not working

I'm having the exact same symptom (after authorizing the migrator tool to run on the new computer, nothing happens, no password prompt or anything).  It's now 4 weeks later and this has not  yet been resolved? :smileysad:  This is really sad that there has been NO update on this issue (on this posting). :smileysad:

We want to fix this as much as you do, KarinNeighbors.

At this time, our developers are still working very hard for a permanent resolution. Though there is no exact date, I'll personally update this thread if this issue will be fixed.

As what Risa-LilaM mentioned, I'd also suggest contacting our QuickBooks Desktop Customer Support Team so they can include you on the list of affected users.

Re: Migrator Tool not working

It appears that the Migration Tool still has some issues. I am trying to move a copy of Desktop Premier 2017 to a new computer running Windows 10. It accepts the special password, I run the BAT file, but then I receive a message "Downloading Quickbooks Installer setup Failed, and nothing else happens.

Re: Migrator Tool not working

Let's move your file, ctdave,

You can run the QuickBooks Install Diagnostic tool to fix the error you got. Then, migrate you file after.

  1. Download the QuickBooks Install DiagnosticTool.
  2. Save the file to the local Desktop.
  3. Close any open programs and run the QBInstall Tool.
  4. Restart your computer after running the tool.

Alternatively, you can create a backup or a portable copy of your company file. Then, download the QuickBooks Desktop Premier 2017 installer, run, and register it using your existing license number and product number. Just press F2 to get them.

After installation, restore your portable or backup file. You can follow JenD's steps above, starting in the middle part.

You can always go back to this thread if you have other questions.

Re: Migrator Tool not working

Jess, Thanks.  I did the first part of your steps, with downloading and running the Diagnostic Tool.

Now do I run the BAT file again to continue the process?

Re: Migrator Tool not working

I appreciate your swift response, @ctdave. Let me chime in so you can finally move your program and files to your new computer successfully.

Yes, you'll need to run the .BAT file again to complete the process. Here's how:

On the new computer:

  1. Insert the USB flash drive.
  2. Wait for the Move QuickBooks tool, or run Move QuickBooks.bat file from your flash drive.
  3. Enter the password you've created, then click Let's go.
  4. Wait for the process to finish.

Once done, your migrator files will be auto-deleted from your USB flash drive. However, your QuickBooks files will still be on your old computer. Thus, changing its file name is greatly recommended to avoid using the wrong file.

You can check out this help article provided previously by my colleague @Jen_D. Read through Move to or reinstall QuickBooks Desktop on another computer. Then, refer to the topic: What to do next. It helps you learn about some of the additional tasks that you may need to perform in order to get your new computer up and running smoothly.

Let us know how it goes. I'd be excited to know it works. If it didn't, we're always here to help.

Re: Migrator Tool not working

I appreciate the support from the team.  When I run the BAT file, the DOS window comes up showing the .exe file running, then the QB Launcher dialog box, then the password box.  Once I put the password in, I get a new box as shown in the attachment.

Re: Migrator Tool not working

Welcome back to the Intuit Community, ctdave.

The resolution steps provided by my colleagues should help move your QuickBooks seamlessly. Now, let’s uninstall and reinstall the software to repair the damaged file.

To start off, create a backup copy of the company file to keep a copy of your previous transactions and then download the latest release of your QuickBooks. This procedure fixes known issues of the software and improve its overall performance.

To install the release:

  1. Tap the Help menu to select the Update QuickBooks Desktop option.
  2. Choose the Update Now tab, then mark the box for Reset Update to remove the previous download.
  3. Hit the Get Updates button to start the process and click OK to continue.
  4. When the QuickBooks Desktop Information window appears, hit OK and then restart your QuickBooks to kick-off the installation.

After completing the following steps, you can start uninstalling the desktop program. Let's go to the Control Panel to find the application.

  1. On your keyboard, click the Windows Start menu and search for Control Panel.
  2. Select Programs and Features or Uninstall a Program.
  3. Choose the version of QuickBooks Desktop you're having problems with from the list of installed programs.
  4. Pick Uninstall/Change and follow the onscreen instructions. If you're unable to this option, sign out and log back in as the Windows Admin.

Next, download the QuickBooks Tools Hub to fix common errors. To get the installer link, proceed directly to Step 4 in this article and then follow the instructions to install it: Clean install QuickBooks Desktop.

Now, you’re ready to perform the clean install process. I'll show the steps.

  1. In the QuickBooks Tools Hub window, select Installation Issues.
  2. Select Clean Install Tool, then select OK.
  3. Pick the QuickBooks version and product version and then choose Continue.
  4. Hit OK when you see the message "Please install your copy of QuickBooks to the default location.”

Once done, let's go ahead and install the desktop program. The following article contains detailed steps about the installation process: Get ready to install QuickBooks Desktop.

Let me know if you need anything else. I’m here anytime to assist further. Have a good one.

Re: Migrator Tool not working

hi @ctdave ,

If you don't have time troubleshooting the migration tool, it is better migrating it manually as JessT of QuickBooks Team has said earlier. May we know how big your file is?

Re: Migrator Tool not working

I downloaded the latest file from the QB website, it loaded and installed fine,, or so it appeared. It did not ask to activate.  When I open the QB program, it has the opening little screen with the moving dots for about 45 seconds, then it disappears.  never gets to the password page.
