QB starts without being requested.

Win 10 OS latest updates; QB Pro Desktop

Since the most recent QB software revision; we are experiencing unrequested openings of Quickbooks on our desktop.

We have two people with seperate/individual Windows accounts/log-ins using a single Desktop Windows PC.  Only one of the people does the accounting using QB.  Now no matter which person opens their account; QB launches itself automaticlly in a new window on their individual desktop.  This is very annoying and suggests that some setting was changed in the process of doing the new QB revision.

Can anyone make suggestions on how we can resolve this issue?

It’s nice to see you in the Community, 3H.

I’m here to help you prevent QuickBooks from opening automatically in a new window.

When you bump into issues like this, the first thing to do is refresh the software by ending all QuickBooks applications and processes running in the background.

Here's how:

  1. Go to your Task Manager.
  2. Select the Processes tab, and click on the Name header to sort the processes alphabetically.
  3. Locate and select QBW32.EXE, and select End Process.

Next, suppress the desktop while starting QuickBooks. This enables you to open a company data file without any windows open.

For the step by step process, check out this article and go directly to the Suppress the QuickBooks Desktop application section.

With these steps, the software will only open when you click to launch it.

Let me know if you have any more questions about using QuickBooks. I'll be right here to answer them. Have a great day head.

This did not do the job.  I also used the <QuickBooksDesktopInstallDiagnosticTool > and the Repair Rebuild tool in QB.  None of them has resolved the unrequested opening of a QB Window in both of the individual Windows accounts.

FWIW:  When the QB window opens, it is empty except for the box for selecting which company is to be opened.  That box has a notice at the top that says is "No Company Open".

Unfortunately, this answer did not resolve the issue.  I also did a the Repair File Utility and the "QuickBooksDesktopInstallDiagnosticTool" from the Intuit site.  None of these tools resolved the underlying issue of unrequested opening of a QB window in either persons individual WIN10 account.

FWIW:  When the QB window opens for one of them; the company select window does have a note at the top indicating that there is "No Company Open".

The other account will sometimes open a notice indicating the there a "New Theme" and/or need to execute a "Setup" activity of some sort.

It's really infuriating!

Hello again, 3H.

Thanks for letting me know all the troubleshooting steps you’ve performed to resolve the issue. This gives a better picture of what happened to your QuickBooks.

In situations like this, we’ll need to determine why the software automatically launches itself in a new window after the Win 10 OS update.

Since the Community is a public platform and gathering of personal data can’t be done for security reasons, I recommend contacting our Technical Support Team.

They have the tools to thoroughly trace the root cause of the error. Once identified, our phone support agents will guide you through resolving this, and make sure you can open QuickBooks without any problems.

To contact:

  1. Go to
  2. Select QuickBooks Desktop.
  3. Choose your QuickBooks for Windows version.
  4. Select the issue/topic.
  5. Click the Get Phone Number button to see the support number.

That's it. Upon giving them a call, you can seamlessly use the software.

Reach out to me if you have additional questions about QuickBooks. I'd be glad to lend a helping hand. Wishing you the best.

FWIW: The Win10 update and the QB major update occurred at about the same time; so they may well be intertwined in some way or of course one or the other may be the root cause of the issue.

Thanks for the suggestion about the QB Tech support.
