Transfer data from desktop to on line

Hi there, papocars.

Let me walk you through how to transfer data from QuickBooks Desktop to the Online version.

First, make sure to review the following information before you begin:

  • You can only import Desktop data within the first 60 days of your Online account.
  • There are a few import limitations and differences between the two products.
  • Always maintain both sets of books before deciding QBO is the right version for your business.

Then, start the conversion process by logging in as the admin to both programs.

  1. Open the file by going to the Company menu.
  2. Choose Export Company File to QuickBooks Online.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to connect to QBO.

Once done, connect to QBO and import your data.  I'm including an article which will guide you through this process from start to finish: Convert QuickBooks Desktop file to QuickBooks Online. For example, it contains links on installing a trial account of Desktop should you not have a version available and how to restore the file in order to import.

After conversion, verify if everything in the company file is working properly. See what to do after converting from QuickBooks Desktop for Windows or Mac to QuickBooks Online for reference. You can use it on how to verify and compare your financial reports, accounts' detail types, and complete Payroll setup.

Additionally, if you're new to QBO, I recommend the following resource as it contains tutorials to help a user become accustomed to the software: QuickBooks Tutorials.

The Community has your back so please let me know if you have additional questions on importing, or anything else. Best wishes.
