Join nowI am updating from Quickbooks pro 2016 to QB pro 2019. When I log in to company file I am prompted to update the company file, so I do. After a few minutes I get a warning that "something went wrong when upgrading credentials log in again to continue". I log in again and still get warning message.

Is your company file already saved locally on your computer? If it's not, you'll need to save the .QBW file locally so we can check if this is caused by a default location.
If it's already saved locally, you'll need to try running the QuickBooks File Doctor to fix any corruption issues on the company file.
Here's how:
Once done, open your QuickBooks company file again. This diagnostic tool should be able to fix any damage to your file. For more information, you can check out this related article: QuickBooks File Doctor - Fix your Damaged Company File or Network.

Lily,
Thanks for responding. I did download and run the QB File Doctor and it found no errors with my Company file. I tried to restore company file in QB Desktop 2019, but get the same error message: "something went wrong when upgrading credentials log in again to continue". Followed by another error: "Quickbooks is unable to complete this operation and needs to restart". Do you have any other suggestions that may help?
Thanks,
I'd like to jump in and help fix the error when updating QuickBooks, John_L.
Let's run the reboot.bat file first, then update the program again. Reboot.bat will re-registers QuickBooks-related .DLL and .OCX files in Microsoft Windows.
Here's how:
Once you're done, try updating QuickBooks again.
Download the updates in Safe Mode, sometimes helps. Please refer to this article under "Download the updates in Safe Mode" for the steps: Fix error when updating Desktop or Payroll.
