QuickBooks Team

What does Error 1117 mean?

Let's work together so you can back up your company file, @CCH82 and @rlisterman.

Errors when trying to back up a company file in QuickBooks Desktop is sometimes caused by the following:

  • Backup location is no longer accessible
  • The name of the file size exceeds the limitation of 65 characters.
  • Damage in the company file.
  • Missing or damaged Network Data file used by the QuickBooks to access company files over the network.

Let's perform some troubleshooting steps to fix this. Let me walk you through the process:

First, make sure that the Windows firewall isn’t blocking Intuit Data Protect (IDP). You'll need to check your firewall to make sure important files are allowed so IDP can have access to it:

  1. Press the Windows key on your keyboard, and type Firewall in the search field.
  2. Choose Allow an app through Windows Firewall, then Allow another app.
  3. Click Browse and go to Program Files(x86)\Common Files\Intuit\Data Protect.
  4. Select QBIDPservice.exe, then Open.
  5. Hit Network types and select the Private checkbox. Tap Add.
  6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 for the files IBUenghost.exe and IntuitDataProtect.exe. If you get a message saying the files already exist, you’re all set.

Next, add IDP to your Trusted Sites:

  1. Press the Windows key on your keyboard, and type Internet options in the search field.
  2. Select Security, then Trusted sites.
  3. Choose Sites and add the following websites. You can copy and paste, or type them manually. Click Add for each site.
    • *
    • *
    • *
    • *
    • (a new trusted site that updates your Intuit Data Protect certificates)
  4. Make sure the Require server verification (https: ) for all sites in this zone is unchecked.
  5. Hit Close, then OK.
  6. Make sure you can open the Intuit Data Protect certificate site. You need to be able to open this to avoid errors with your backups.
  7. Try to back up with Intuit Data Protect

If it’s still not working, let's ensure that IBuEngHost.exe isn’t running as a Windows user. This needs to run as a System user for IDP to work properly:

Check to see if the file is running as System:

  1. Right-click your Windows taskbar, then select Start Task Manager.
  2. Select the Details tab. Look for IBuEngHost.exe. Make sure it has the User name as System next to it and the Status is running.

If IBuEngHost.exe isn't running as System, refer to these steps:

  1. Download a new installer for your QuickBooks versionNote: Save the file where you can easily find it.
  2. Go to the location where you saved the installer.
  3. Right-click the installer, then select Run as Administrator.
  4. Proceed with the re-installation.
  5. After the install, look for IBuEngHost.exe in Task Manager again. Make sure the status is running and the User name is System.
  6. Try to back up with Intuit Data Protect
