Restoring company file from .qbb

I was having trouble transferring files to a new laptop and after weeks, I finally was able to restore from a .qbb!

My question is that the file sizes are sightly smaller after restoring (0.1 - 0.19 mb).  Does this mean potential data was lost during the restore or is this typically normal after restoring a company file on a new laptop?

Restoring company file from .qbb

Hi Mary,

We're unable to determine if there was data loss. This could be due to some missing attributes or elements in your transactions. You can run reports like Profit and Loss and Balance Sheet to see if you have the right numbers. If so, this means all your transactions are safe.

If you notice a missing entry, list, name, etc., please come back to this thread. Have a good day!

I needed to download QB again on a different compupter because of the Windows 7 issue.  After I restored the file from Backup when I try to open the check register I get an error message [removed] and Quick Books closes.

What is the error message or code? Which QuickBooks version (year) do you have?

As the first step, run the verify tool (File > Utilities > Verify Data).

Hi damienfloors,

There are a few reasons why this error occurs. It might be a folder permission issue, multiple company files are already open, or a damaged/corrupted company (.qbw) file.

Let's start by ending all QuickBooks processes that is running in the background. Beforehand, ensure QuickBooks for Mac is updated to the latest release

  1. Press the Command + Space keys.
  2. Type in Activity Monitor in the Spotlight field.
  3. Click on Activity Monitor.
  4. Highlight all QuickBooks-related files and click on Quit Process.
  5. Click on Quit to confirm the action.

Then, reboot your computer and open QuickBooks as Administrator.

Otherwise, turn off the Host Multi-User Access option on workstations. Your server computer should be the only one hosting.

  1. Open QuickBooks on one of your workstations.
  2. Don't open your company file. Instead, select the File menu and hover over Utilities.
  3. If you see the "Host Multi-User Access" option, don’t select it. Move on to the next workstation. This one isn’t causing the problem.
  4. If Stop Hosting Multi-User Access is an option, click on it.
  5. Repeat these steps on all of your workstations.

Once done, move on to your server computer. This is the computer that normally hosts your company files.

  1. Open QuickBooks.
  2. Go to the File menu and hover over Utilities.
  3. If Host Multi-User Access is an option, select it.
  4. Toggle the setting. Repeat the process and select Stop Hosting Multi-User Access. This resets Multi-user Mode.
  5. Repeat the process one more time and select Host Multi-User Access.

Let me share this link in case you're encountering the Company file is missing error message.

Please keep us posted on how things go. We'll be here to keep helping.

Welcome back to the Community, damienfloors.

I appreciate letting us know the result of the troubleshooting steps you’ve performed. Since the file is still locked into the server, I have to check the setup of the company file.

I’m unable to perform the process without asking for sensitive information. We value the safety of your personal information, so I recommend contacting our Technical Support Team.

They have extra tools that can check if the .qbw file is damaged or corrupted. Once they’ve e identified the root cause, one of our specialists will assist in configuring the company file.

Then, make sure it’s no longer linked to your computer. You can contact them by following these steps:

  1. Go to the Help section of the company file to see the contact details.
  2. Choose QuickBooks Desktop Help to open the Have a Question window.
  3. Hit the Contact us link to see the Contact Us screen.
  4. Tap the Search for something else link and then type the issue in the field box.
  5. Hit the Search menu to display the Message Us feature.
