Sales Tax Center Balance is Wrong after importing from Desktop

I imported my books from QB Desktop and the Sales Tax Center balance is wrong. I have 2 taxes set up on the desktop. The Sales Tax Center is showing the amount due for one of the taxes (GE) and showing the payments for both taxes(GE and TA). This makes the Sales Tax Center show a credit balance that gets bigger every month. What can I do to make the balance correct?

I already tried editing a payment for the 2nd tax (TA) but no matter what I changed the payment still shows up on the Sales Tax Center.

When I view a Sales Tax Liability Report, the TA tax shows up on the report as Other.

In the Chart of Accounts, the Sales Tax Liability Account is correct.

Re: Sales Tax Center Balance is Wrong after importing from Desktop

Thank you very much for your quick reply. I opened my books in a private browser as you suggested and it did not fix the problem.

I called the phone help line and learned a lot about the way my desktop books imported into online. In my desktop version, my TA tax (2nd tax) was being charged as a line item on my invoices. It showed up in the desktop Sales Tax Center without problem. In the online version, the tax entered as a line item doesn't show up on the Sales Tax Center page. I would have to go back and edit every invoice to fix the problem or edit every payment to adjust for the second tax.

Everything else between desktop and online matches up beautifully. The chart of accounts matches. I have learned that online, the Sales Tax Center screen will reset itself at the beginning of the year. It doesn't affect my reporting or even my actual sales tax liability account. My plan is to ignore this particular screen for three months until the new year. I will continue to pay my taxes properly and all my new invoices will be entered with the GE tax and TA taxes combined so going forward everything will report correctly.

I hope this helps anyone else who might have this same problem.

Re: Sales Tax Center Balance is Wrong after importing from Desktop

Hello there, ValkyrieAnne.

Thank you for posting in the QuickBooks Community. I'm here to share some troubleshooting steps to help you show the correct balance in the Sales Tax Center.

There aren't any similar reported cases about this. Let's try some basic troubleshooting steps to help you correct the balance.

It might be because of a browser related issue. Unusual browsing behavior like this happens, if the browser is holding too much data.

To check, sign into your company using a private browsing window and try to check the balance in the Sales Tax Center. Please refer to these steps based on which browser you're using:

  • Google Chrome: press Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Mozilla Firefox: press Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Internet Explorer: press Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Safari: press Command + Shift + N

If you're able to see the correct balance, then the cache was probably the issue. If you clear your cache, then, you should be able to go through your normal workflow in a regular browser.

Let me know how it goes, and we'll take it from there. I'll be here to help you further.
