Join nowI have a client who tried online and like desktop better. They were able to export data from online to desktop but their are lots of information missing. How do I fix this? The information like profit and loss is correct but that transferred all of the company data and a lot of the company data is missing. Like invoices, bills, etc. Any help would be appreciated.
I think what you're seeing is rather normal. The conversion from QB Online to desktop is lacking.
Hello there, Blueishmango.
Good to see you here in QuickBooks Community. I'm here to help and provide some insights about exporting data from QuickBooks Online (QBO) to QuickBooks Desktop 2019.
There are limitations when exporting QBO data, that includes the Invoices, Bills and some other lists which are not imported to Desktop. To learn more about export limitations, you can check this article: Export limitations - QuickBooks Online to QuickBooks Desktop.
To make sure you're able to proceed with converting your QBO account, let's configure Internet Explorer's security for a successful export.
Here's how:
Note: It is recommended that you remove all other websites in reference to intuit.com from the list of websites, as *.intuit.com will cover all Intuit sites.
5. Close the Trusted sites window.
6. Uncheck Enable Protected Mode.
7. Close Internet Explorer.
Once you've closed Internet Explorer, let's run QuickBooks Desktop and Internet Explorer in Administrator Mode. Just make sure QuickBooks Desktop 2018 is already installed on your computer. Here's how:
For visual references for exporting, you can view the visual Guide to Export.
To further assists you with the steps, I encourage you to contact our QuickBooks Online Support Team. They have additional tools to pull up your account and do a remote session.
Please let me know how it goes. If you have any other questions about exporting data from QBO don't hesitate to click the Reply button below. I'm always here to help.
Hi thanks for your clear explanations.
Must I install QB Desktop on the same computer to export the data?
I have an old computer with Windows 7 but already installed it on Windows 10 machine. I get 3 copies so I can do that. I just want to make sure I will be able to move the files over to the newer machine.
Also when I get into IE 11 and Windows 7, when I click on the Gear icon in QB online, it just disappears so I cannot get to the export data prompt. It works in Firefox and Chrome but I cannot use those for this exercise.
What do you recommend?
Do you know how I can keep that gear icon from disappearing?
Or is there another way to get to the export data prompt?
Many thanks for your help.
Regards,
LC
It's best if both programs are on the same computer, LC. This way, the exporting and importing of files will be seamless.
Regarding the exporting of data, you're right. We'll have to use Internet Explorer. You should be able to transfer the data without any issues. Since the Gear icon disappeared, we can try a few steps. Let's start with opening QuickBooks Online using an incognito window, then try to export your data. If you're able to do so, you can go back to the main browser, then clear the cache. Too much of it causes the program to behave differently.
Although, if you're still unable to export your data, I'd suggest reaching out to our customer care support. An agent will guide you through the process. Here's how:
Don't hesitate to reach out to us if you have other concerns. We'd be pleased to work with you again.
Sorry, but these instructions are complete garbage at this time. The update team failed at life here and updated the system and dumped the location where we can access our data file. The entire transfer system is completely garbage and whoever dreamed this up needs to be fired and banned from programming any future software for life. It's apparent to me at this point that flipping burgers may be the line of work best suited for them but even that may be a challenge.
The gear icon missing is a known problem and I don't understand why they did not give you the work around. I found this online today. http://qbo.intuit.com/app/exportqbodatatoqbdt
I did this today and I was able to get the conversion rolling; however, I am finding I have lost some information. A random vendor and all it's transactions for one. If anyone knows why this happened, I'm all ears.
Good afternoon, @hometownelegance.
We want to assist you with all your business needs. I want to ensure you that I am here to help and will stick with you until we get this export issue resolved.
Above you stated that the Gear Icon disappears when you go through Internet Explorer. The reason for this is because the browser is no longer being supported by Microsoft. As we make the transition away from Internet Explorer, we have hit a few bumps in the road. No worries though, below I am providing some steps to get your data exported.
From here, you will be able to continue to export from QuickBooks Online to QuickBooks Desktop. If there are any issues along the way, just reply to this thread. I will be here to help. Have a great day and talk soon.
I tried this but it freezes. you have to figure out how to fix this . We convert many clients to desktop since qbo is so awful.
Let's export the data using an incognito window, MargauxInDenver.
Simply press Ctrl + Shift + P on your keyboard to launch it. Also, we can clear the cache on your Internet Explorer since it causes error in QuickBooks. To do this, press Ctrl + Shift + Delete simultaneously. Once done, let's export the data again to see if everything's good already.
I also suggest contacting our Customer Support Team if you still unable to export your QuickBooks Online data to QuickBooks Desktop. They can check the reason behind this unusual behavior and resolve it as soon as possible.
I'll be right here if you need more help. Take care!
I'm having to same problem. I've spent hours on it with no luck.
I entered https://c30.qbo.intuit.com/app/exportqbodatatoqbdt
and it did take me to the next screen but when I push "Get Started", nothing happens
Please Help
Hello Denny4,
There's a possibility that the pop-up blocker on your browser is activated. We can disable it to ensure you can continue with the process. You can use this article to check your pop-up blocker: Why doesn't anything happen when I select a button or link?
Otherwise, we'll do a few browser troubleshooting steps. Though, cache boosts browser's background processes, it can also cause issues when piled up. Here's how to get rid of any cache-related concerns:
That'll get you going in exporting your QuickBooks Online data to QuickBooks Desktop.
Let us know the results so we can further review it if necessary.
Agreed this is completely Garbage. Instructions dont work and I spent so much time getting this resolved. Still no use.
No one can help, as not even customer service know the solution. Total waste of time and money. TON of time lost talking to the customer service. Right now on a call since 1hr 30 mins and they cannot figure out anything.
Visit this thread for your reference
If you still hit the wall, you may have 2 options left.
1. Utlize the 3rd party migration tool
2. Purchase a 3rd party conversion service.
That is an understatement..... One would think that Intuit could fix this ongoing problem to save their clientele hours upon hours of wasted time trying to make this work. Why in the world they are stuck with using IE is beyond comprehension.... It wasn't, never was our will be anything but a piece of junk.... Hence Microsoft's finally abandoning and moving on. Time for Intuit to do the same. This is pathetic at best.
Did you get the gear icon to appear or did you just Export everything to Excel?
I have tried all of these suggestions and still no luck. I select get started but nothing happens. There are no pop up blockers. Please help.
Thanks for posting to the Community, @rkfaith.

I have recently ran into the same issue! After FINALLY getting QuickBooks to convert from Online to Desktop... Most of the data is there, including bills and transactions, others were converted as journal entries which is just fine. I can already complete my work in half the time by using Desktop! HOWEVER, while reconciling our bank statement, I just found a major vendor that is completely missing from our system. Name, transactions and all! I confirmed it's in our Online just fine. This terrifies me, how do I get a year and a half's worth of data for this one vendor into Desktop, and what else is missing?? The P&L looked okay, so what happened? I can't reconcile my bank accounts!
