Update my 2013 QB for Mac to usable format

Hi All,

I have Mac High Sierra version on my desktop computer.  I had to update to this in order to load Office for Mac system.  Now that I've uploaded this, my 2013 QB desktop for Mac won't open.  I'm sure I need to update that, but I've no clue how to do this.  Does anyone know?

Thanks in advance.

Nancy

Thanks for coming back, NancyMac.

Old versions of QuickBooks such as QuickBooks Desktop for Mac 2013 is not compatible with High Sierra (Higher OS version). That said, you'll want to consider updating to a newer version.

For more detailed information, check out this reference about QuickBooks Desktop for Mac system requirements: System requirements for QuickBooks Desktop for Mac 2019.

In the meantime, you want to try using the QuickBooks Desktop for Mac Trial version first so you can explore the new features available on the new version.

Here’s how to download:

  1. Visit this link: Download QuickBooks Desktop for Mac 2019 30-day trial.
  2. Select your Product and Version.
  3. Click Search.
  4. Click Download.

For step-by-step instruction on how to install and set it up, you may check this article: Install and set up QuickBooks Mac Desktop.

I’m just a few clicks away so please let me know if you have other questions. Have a nice day!

Update my 2013 QB for Mac to usable format

Hi Charles,

Thank you for your reply.   I downloaded the 2019 version.  I haven't registered it yet.  I'll do so in the next few days.   I have 2 different "companies" for lack of a better word, that I keep on my QB.  Only one of them auto sync'd when I completed the download.  Unfortunately, it's not the one that I really need access to.  How do I sync the second company over?  I should have the latest backed up file.  Is there a simple, step by step way to do this?   Thanks in advance.

I appreciate the prompt response, NancyMac.

You can add the second company into your QuickBooks Desktop for Mac version 2019 by creating a backup from the old version and restoring it into the new version.

Here's how to create a backup:

  1. From the File menu, select Back Up.
  2. On the following dialog window, select the folder where you want to store your backup file (.dmg). It's a good idea to save backups somewhere other than your main local drive in case of a system failure.
  3. When you have chosen, click Start Backup. The name of the backup will be your QuickBooks filename with the date and time the backup completed. You have the option to view the file in Finder.

For more details about creating a backup of your company file, you can have this article handy: QuickBooks Mac: Create a Backup of your company file.

Here's how to restore the company file:

  1. Double click the .dmg file. A new window opens the Ghost drive. This displays the back up of your company file along with your attachments (if applicable).
  2. Drag the company file (with .qbXXXX extension) to the folder where you want to store the company file.
  3. Drag the Attached Documents Library folder (if applicable) to the same folder as the QuickBooks company file.
  4. Click the copy of the company file saved on the desired location or go to File > Open Company.

Once the company file is restored, QuickBooks will ask you to update the file. Just click the Update button.

Update my 2013 QB for Mac to usable format

Hi,

I can't get to the file menu because I can't open the old QB program.  It says that I can't use this version of QB with my current MAC OS.  So I can't go to the file menu to create the back up if I can't open the program...  What to do?

Thanks,

Nancy

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.  This won't work, though.

I can't open the program to get to the file menu (your step 1).

Here's how to create a backup:

  1. From the File menu, select Back Up.

When I click on the old QB icon it says that it's not supported by my current MAC OS.  Am I supposed to be opening this icon, or my new icon?  The one company transferred to the new QB, the other didn't.

Thanks,

Nancy

Thanks for getting back to us, NancyMac.

Yes! You should open the old QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) for Mac icon. However, since it's version is already unsupported, I know another workaround that we can try.

If you've saved a backup file through a USB or Hard Drive, you can use it to restore the file on the new QBDT. Please refer to the steps provided by my colleague Charies_M on how to do it. However, if you don't have one, you need to manually recreate the company file.

Just in case, I'll add these articles for future reference:
