Updated to QB Pro 2018. Local backup is not seeing the drive I normally use. QB is on C drive & backup file on the server. How do I find the drive on the server?

Installed QB Desktop Pro 2018 on C drive.

Normally backup is done in a partitioned drive on the server.

Doing a local backup QB is not seeing my partitioned drive on the server. When I use the browse button I cannot see the drive.

I've tried to type in the address where to save backup copies but it's not working.  It will let me backup to the C drive.

How do I get QB to see the correct drive to backup on?

Hello there chickadee2112,

I appreciate you sharing with us the details about your concern. Let me help you find that back up copy.

The location of the backup copy of your company file depends on where the file is originally stored. You can check the Product Information page to locate the original .QBW file location. Just press F2 on your keyboard while QuickBooks Desktop is open to view the Product Information page.

You can also check your backup settings to find the folder location of the backup file.

Here's how:

  1. Click File, then select Back Up Company
  2. Select Create Local Backup
  3. Click the Options button.
  4. Check the folder location under Tell us where to save your backup copies.

If you're still unable to find the backup file, you can do a wildcard search on your computer to locate it. Simply type one of the following into the search bar in the Start Menu. Make sure to include the asterisk (*) before the extension type to ensure the search works correctly.

  • *.qbw (Working Files)
  • *.qbb (Back Up Files)
  • *.qba (Accountants Copy Files)
  • *.qbx (Accountants Transfer Files)
  • *.qby (Accountants Change Files)

The default location for a company files is: C:\Users\Public\Public Documents\Intuit\QuickBooks\Company Files

That should do it!

If you're still stuck, please let me know so we can perform additional troubleshooting steps to find your backup copy. Thank you.

I should have known - just rebooting my computer made everything work fine.  QB can now see my network drive where my backups are stored. :)

This is not true: "The location of the backup copy of your company file depends on where the file is originally stored."

You control where to put backups.

Agree, that was the whole issue I was having.  I was trying to control where the backup went but QB was not letting me see the drive where I stored my backups.  Rebooting worked.  QB now see's all my drives so I can save my backup on the server.

I'm having the same problem as chickadee2112 after installing all new computers and a new server in our offices.  I also agree with one of the comments below that states you get to chose where you want to place your backup.  I want to place my backup on the server in my backup file, however, when I browse for a folder I cannot see my network.  How do I make QuickBooks be able to see my network?

Welcome to the thread, DormBros.

Generally, QuickBooks Desktop does not automatically create backup files when entering data. Backups are saved to your preferred location once you opt to manually create one or if you've signed up for automatic backups.

The automatic backups save a copy of the company after a set number of times you close the file. This feature will directly save the data entered in the company to avoid accidental loss.

To be able to see the network when creating a backup, make sure that the server is set to share with read and write access. In order for QuickBooks to access the folders. I recommend contacting an IT expert to help in setting up the server.
