Upgrade QB for Mac 2012 to 2019 OS Issue:

Hello - I want to upgrade my Mac OS from El Capitan, which supports my QB 2012, to High Sierra which won't. I therefore need to upgrade to QB to 2019. Will I be able to upgrade from 2012 after High Sierra is installed?

You’ve come to the right place, @Darkchalk.

Yes, you can still upgrade your version to QuickBooks Desktop for Mac 2019. I can provide you with minimum requirements for this.

  • At least macOS 10.12 (Sierra); supported by macOS 10.13 (High Sierra), macOS 10.14 (Mojave)
  • Intel processor, Core 2 Duo or higher
  • Multiuser Server: Intel Core 2 Duo or higher processor to run the server
  • 2 GB RAM (4 GB RAM recommended)
  • 250 MB of available disk space
  • CD/DVD drive or Internet connection for downloaded installation
  • Printer: 100% Macintosh-compatible printer, if you plan to print invoices, checks, deposit slips, lists, purchase orders, mailing labels, reports, or graphs
  • Checks: Use Intuit Checks if you plan to print checks. Canadian Image Ready Checks are not supported
  • Product registration required

For more detailed information, you may refer to this article: System requirements for QuickBooks Desktop for Mac 2019.

On the other hand, as suggested by @SkinnyRaven you can try using the QuickBooks Desktop for Mac Trial version first so you can explore the new features available on the new version.

Here’s how to download:

  1. Visit this link: Download QuickBooks Desktop for Mac 2019 30-day trial.
  2. Select your Product and Version.
  3. Click Search.
  4. Click Download.

For step-by-step instruction on how to install and set it up, you may check this article: Install and set up QuickBooks Mac Desktop.

Keep me posted if you have other questions. I’m just a few clicks away.

I got a few details to add about upgrading your file, Darkchalk.

You can back up your company file in QuickBooks Mac 2012 (File > Back up) while you're still using El Capitan. Then, you will restore it in QuickBooks Mac 2019 in High Sierra. There's no need to install QB Mac 2012.

  1. Click on File.
  2. Select Open Company and select your file.
  3. Click Open.

Please let me know if you still have questions about upgrading your file.

Re: Upgrade QB for Mac 2012 to 2019 OS Issue:

I would expect QB Mac 2019 to open and upgrade your existing file. You might want to try the trial version from https://qblittlesquare.com, then if something doesn't go as you like restore your old OS and stay with your current version. Keep in mind QB Mac 2020 will likely be released in the fall.

Re: Upgrade QB for Mac 2012 to 2019 OS Issue:

Thanks juVielL. I am good as far as requirements for the upgrade. My main concern was that my QB2012 files would not transfer into the QB2019 version once I upgraded to the new OS that doesn't support QB2012.

Re: Upgrade QB for Mac 2012 to 2019 OS Issue:

Thanks JessT: That was my concern: would files from QBM2012 "upload" into QBM2019 without QBM2012 being installed (since it won't run in High Sierra) once I upgraded to High Sierra. Will do as you suggest and thankfully it sounds pretty straight forward :).
