Upgrading from Pro 2018 to Premier 2019

I'm thinking about upgrading from desktop Pro 2018 to desktop Premier 2019.  Will I be able to use my existing data file?  Or will I need to start from scratch and manually enter all of my customer information, etc in order to use Premier?  Thank you

It's nice to see you in the Community space, greenroomla.

Thanks for considering to upgrading from QuickBooks Pro 2018 to QuickBooks Premier 2019. I’d be glad to share some information about the upgrade process.

When changing to a different software version, the first thing to do is install QuickBooks Premier 2019. After performing the installation process, your data from an earlier the version of QuickBooks will update automatically the first time you open the company file in the new version.

That said, there isn’t a need to start from scratch and manually enter the data. All you need to to is restore the existing company file.

Once you're ready to upgrade, I'm adding articles that will guide you through the step by step process:

The information will help you smoothly convert your software to a new version.

Please know that I'm just a post away if you have questions about QuickBooks. Have a great weekend.

To answer your questions

when you install use the custom install option and insure that  the install path ends in the year or the software being installed 2-3 screens later) - that way the new year version will **not** overwrite the old.

Yes, when you open 2019, QB finds the 2018 file and offers to convert it to the 2019 format.  You will not have to reenter anything.  Pro and premier use the same data file, the only difference is functions in premier are more flexible.

a file converted to the 2019 format can not be used by 2018, so if you want you can uninstall 2018 at that point, after you are sure there were no issues in updating

I upgraded to QB Desktop 2019 and didn't realize that i couldn't transfer my accountant's 2018 copy into it. how do I convert a qbw 2018 file from my accountant to a qbw 2019 file so it can be imported into my QB desktop?

Hi there, SSS00.

Thank you for posting here in the QuickBooks Community.

Currently, QuickBooks doesn't allow you to convert a 2018 file to a 2019 file.

I suggest to ask a copy of the file from your accountant for 2019 and import it to your company. You'll need to have a the same version to allow the import.

Here's how to to import Accountant's copy:

1. Back up your QuickBooks company file.

2. Select the File menu, then select Send Company File.

3. Choose Accountant's Copy, then select Client Activities.

4. Select Import Accountant's Changes from File if the file is saved on your computer. Choose Import Accountant’s Changes from Web if you are using Accountant's Copy File Transfer.

5. Review the Accountant's Changes and make sure that it does not have a problem with the work you've done.

6. To enter the changes to your file, select Incorporate Accountant's Changes or Close if you do not want to import the changes.

7. To close all windows, Select OK. Click OK to create a backup.

8. Select OK to proceed then Close.

9. Click Yes if you want to update the closing date and password.

Please check this article for more information and the uses about the Accountant's Copy feature in QBDT: Use the Accountant's Copy.

Please know that you're always welcome to post if you have any other concerns. Wishing you and your business continued success.
