uploading backup on USB to new computer

Thanks for reaching out to the Community, @rh711

I'd be glad to provide info with moving your company file from a USB.

You can move your company file to either a different location on the same computer or a new computer. Below, are the instructions with moving your company file to another computer.

Here's how:

  1. Before you begin, ensure that you install QuickBooks Desktop on the new computer.
  2. Create a backup file to your original computer. You can skip this step since you mentioned you already backed up your file on a USB.
  3. Move the backup company file to your new computer.
  4. Follow the steps to restore the backup on your new computer.
  5. If you use payroll, download the latest tax table after you move your file.

Also, if you're moving your company file to another location on the same computer, you can refer back to this article for more detailed information: Move your company file to another computer

Just like @Kendra H says. Backup files can only be restored into an open instance of Quickbooks. When QB is installed you can click or double-click the icon for a company file and it will be opened by QB but backup files are different and cannot be opened, only restored to create a new or overwrite an existing working file.

And as far as restoring from a USB it is usually better to migrate your backup file from the USB drive onto the same hard drive the program is installed on. Backing up to USB works just fine but it is the restore from that tends to cause issues and moving or cvopying from thumb drive to hard drive only takes seconds
