Will I be able to transfer all my data and templates to a new version of Quickbooks if my old version cannot back up?

My old Quickbooks Basic 2002 has problems.  I've been backing up files to Carbonite.  Recently I had a major crash (Windows 7 problem), installed a new hard drive and re-installed Windows 7.  My original Quickbooks CD is damaged, so I kept the old hard drive as E: and use Quickbooks from there.  But there's multiple problems; I have to close 7 error messages to get into my company data, and it will not back up.  I'm afraid to keep using it and want to upgrade to Quickbooks Pro, but I want to be assured I can transfer all my data and templates from files in the E: directory since I don't have a backup file anymore.

That is a very old version of QB (15 years!).  There is no guarantee it will upgrade with no problems, but if you purchase the newer version from Intuit (2017 is out now), they should help you with the upgrade.  I'd give them a call to be sure.

The templates are internal to the file and not saved out separately. Ask Intuit is they can do this for you, just in case; but old templates don't always work in the newer file, anyway. The jumps through 2 or 3 years at a time is supposed to Update things to prevent incompatible from a 15 year gap, as you are now facing.
