Adjusting colum widths of Item Code drop down list when creating a customer invoice

When I open up the Invoice template and need to find the Item to be billed, I click on the dropdown list in the Item code column and the Item List appears; however, the widths of the columns are so exaggerated that I can't see the Item Description.  How do I make some columns narrower than others in that dropdown list?

Adjusting colum widths of Item Code drop down list when creating a customer invoice

Hello there, CoffeeBeanCounter.

You can manually adjust it by hovering your mouse icon in between the column's header. Let me show you how to do it.

  1. Open QuickBooks Desktop.
  2. Go to the Customers tab and click Create Invoices.
  3. Choose the template by clicking the Template drop-down button.
  4. Hover your mouse icon on the three-dots in between the header column.
  5. Click and drag that icon to extend the view for the description.

To have this as a default, you'll have to save this transaction. I also provide a screen shot for your additional reference.

For future reference, check out this link with detailed information on how to create and use a custom form style.

Please don't hesitate to reply on this post if you need extra help. I'm here to help you out. Take care.

Adjusting colum widths of Item Code drop down list when creating a customer invoice

Hi - I appreciate your reply; however, it does not answer my question.  I already know how to adjust the column width on an invoice -- my question was not about that -- it was this: when you go to the first line of an invoice to enter an item, you indicate the "Qty" in the first column, the Lot # in the 3rd column (if applicable), and in the 4th column ("Item Code") you have the ability to search for and choose the item by clicking on the Drop-down arrow in that column which then makes the entire "Item List" appear on screen with its own columns: Item Code, Mfg Code, Item Type, and Item Description.  THAT is where the issue lies - there is no way to adjust the column widths of that Item List that appears after clicking on the drop-down arrow. See attached screen shot.

Hi CoffeeBeanCounter,

Thank you for explaining everything in detail and for the screenshot.

At the moment, we’re unable to adjust the column widths of the Item Code drop down list. Normally, they are sized in a way that you can see the information about the item. Though there could be long names or long descriptions, the widths are adjusted to at least let you see most of the details in each column.

Let's update your QuickBooks and see if that fixes the display.

  1. Go to the Help menu and select Update QuickBooks Desktop.
  2. Go to the Update Now tab. You can select the Reset Update checkbox to clear all previous update downloads.
  3. Select Get Updates.
  4. Restart QuickBooks when the download is finished.
  5. When prompted, accept the option to install the new release.

You can try creating invoices after the update. Then, please let me know how it goes. Thanks in advance.

Adjusting colum widths of Item Code drop down list when creating a customer invoice

Hello again,

Updating QB is not going to accomplish anything.  We JUST migrated from the 2018 version to the 2020 version of QB Enterprise Solutions for Manufacturing and Wholesale 6 weeks ago and I seriously doubt that there have been any updates since mid-January that would fix this problem.  I have little to no faith in Intuit at this point as we waited 2 YEARS for Intuit's software engineers in India to figure out how to fix an issue with the Inventory Lot/Row/Bin feature that was creating both negative and positive quantities of the same lot #'s instead of netting all transactions to one quantity, AND we were given no concession or discount on our annual QB subscription during those 2 years, even though we remained a QB user despite the enormous amount of extra time and money we had to spend monitoring and reconciling our inventory counts every quarter.  The only thing preventing us from dropping QB altogether and moving to a different accounting and inventory control software is the prohibitive cost of other software platforms.

Updating to the latest released versions can fix and balance the column size of your template, @CoffeeBeanCounter.

Let's open a sample file and compare the column widths of your invoice template. If it works fine from the sample file, we need to run the utilities of your original company data by following the steps below:

A. To Verify Data

  1. Go to File.
  2. Select Utilities.
  3. Choose Verify Data.
  4. Click OK.

B. To Rebuild Data

  1. Go to File.
  2. Select Utilities.
  3. Choose Rebuild Data.
  4. Click OK.

But if the issue persists, we can consider repairing QuickBooks to continue our troubleshooting steps. I'm adding an article that'll guide you in recording payments from your customers.

Thank you for your reply, but as stated in my previous post, the issue is NOT with the Column Widths of the Invoice Template!  The issue is with the Drop Down Item List that appears to allow users to select items to be included on the invoice.  And furthermore, our QuickBooks software is set to update automatically for any new releases........nice try, but not the solution.

Hi @CoffeeBeanCounter,

I appreciate your prompt reply as well.

As my peer @JessT mentioned above, there isn't an option to make this adjustment at this time.

I understand how this feature can be handy to you and other users as well. With that said, we've taken note of this idea you shared.
