I just got a call from a 609 area code claiming to be a representative from QB. He said that he is seeing an issue with my updates. I told him that I've been seeing the reminder for a couple of days and I will do the update this weekend. He said that was great, but that is a software update. He is concerned about a "component update". He asked if I could look in my program under "help" and go to "update QB". I confirmed that "automatic update" is "ON". He then asked me to go to "update now" and tell him the dates under "last checked". The dates were all yesterday. He asked me the status, and they all indicated "nothing new downloaded". He said that should not be and asked me to hit "get updates". I did so and some files updated. He then instructed me to shut QB down and restart it. I did so, and he asked me to go back to the update tab...I confirmed the "last checked" column indicated the current date/time. He asked me to look at "critical updates". It indicated "nothing new downloaded".
At this point, he told me that I must have a setting that is not allowing the downloads to happen and asked me to open browser and type in "logmein123".... I stalled saying my computer is being slow...
I googled the number he was calling from and it said "vehicle warranty scam". I immediately hung up. He called back 3 times and then a new number from a Texas area code called 3 times. The Texas number googled as a billing service out of Oregon.
I'm sure I averted a scam, but wanted to post here as these do come around often.
