Hi, I purchased new unopened Desktop Premier Plus on eBay. After I installed the cd on my computer it’s asking for a retailer authorization code. I’ve reached out to the person I bought it from with no response. Quickbooks support says I have to contact eBay for the code. Did I get scammed? Thanks for any help & advise.
A retailer authorization code? Can you share the screenshot? Hit the "Photos" icon on the menu.
Also share the link of the item you bought in eBay.

Hello there, Terrapizza.
I appreciate for adding more details about your concern, especially the screenshot. This will guide us on how to fix your installation issue.
The desktop software you purchased from the retail store is legit. Our support team is also correct that you’ll have to contact eBay for the validation code because they’re the one who’ll provide or email it to you.
Once you have the validation code, you can start the installation process. Here’s an article that will walk you through the steps: Install QuickBooks Desktop.
In case you encounter any roadblocks, the following reference contains solutions on how to them: Fix QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) install errors. I suggest you click on the link for the specific error to view the complete troubleshooting steps.

Did you ever get a resolution to your issue?
I'm having the same issue...purchased from seller on eBay and it's asking for "Authorization Code",
to proceed with the install. Called Intuit...on hold for an hour, only to have them tell me to contact eBay.
eBay themselves aren't going to know anything...it would be the seller, if anyone. I've reached out to them, but haven't heard back. Let me know if you've gotten any further.
Oh BTW...the Intuit replies to these threads seem mostly "canned" responses and are mostly useless!!
If the seller doesn't respond to your complaint, you are likely to be scammed. Only very limited partners offer QB Desktop licenses bundled with QB Payroll.
Not sure if it's a "scam", so to speak...it appears to be a legit version...
but, where does the "Retail Store Authorization Code" come from?!?
If I go and buy one from Office Depot...are they gonna give me an "Authorization Code".
I doubt they even know what that even is!! This seems like an Intuit issue.
We found many sellers in the marketplaces offering refurbished licenses. Once we have trouble activating the license, they will be silent.
I'm looking for a 2021 QBD version without subscription. Can you help me with this? I saw previous replies saying to click your name and message privately but I don't see how to do that.
Can you help with getting a 2021 version of QB without subscription. I don't see how to message you privately.
That may be true, but this was a retail box version (with CD)...just like you would buy in store.
Had to scratch off the back, to get the License #.

I'll add a few more details,, vh2150.
Once you're able to install QuickBooks, you have the option to register and activate it by either using an existing Intuit Account or creating a new one.
For QuickBooks Desktop products purchased from eBay and other 3rd-party websites, an authorization code will be provided by the said retailer.
I'll be adding these article to guide you when activating QuickBooks:
Keep us posted here if you have other questions or concerns about setting up your QuickBooks account. I'm always here to help.
Did you ever get this resolved? I bought 2022 QB Premier w enhanced payroll on eBay as well and need a retailer authorization code as well. This is beyond frustrating. I've been using QuickBooks for almost 20 years and I think this might have to change soon, if its not resolved.
Did you ever get this resolved? I need a retailer authorization code as well.I purchased a sealed CD set from Ebay. Scratched off the codes and all is well up to this code...
I'm glad to see you here, @Mottsville. I'll make sure you get your authorization code.
Your account is used to create these codes. I recommend getting in touch with our Customer Service department. They'll be able to help you generate the activation code in more detail.
Here's how:

Don't listen to these "canned" responses by Quickbooks "employees"....it's all nonsense!
I spent hours on the phone (several times) trying to get a code from them, only to ultimately have them tell me that I'd have to contact eBay to get a code. Well, we KNOW eBay themselves wouldn't have any code...it would be the sellers responsibility, but they wouldn't have anything either. Not sure if these people are selling stolen copies...that they snuck out of Staples or something...not sure. I think what would normally happen, is if you bought at Staples (for example)...it would get scanned at the register and then that retail code would never be asked for...or, might be on a receipt or something (I don't really know). I ended up creating a return thru eBay and got the seller to refund. The seller was "2014_gladiator". Not sure what the deal was...but, many people have had the issue and QB support still has NO IDEA what they're doing and will keep you on the phone forever and keep escalating the issue to no avail.
Hi, @vh2150.
I understand your frustration about this matter, and I value your effort when trying to connect with Support to get the authorization code. I'm stepping into the thread to share with you some additional insights about getting the code to activate QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT).
Since QuickBooks was not purchased directly from us, we can't confirm or deny the legitimacy of the product. However, the retail store authorization code would come always from the seller. In this case, you need to contact eBay to get the code needed. This way, we can ensure that the copy is not stolen and came from a reputable source.
Once you have the code handy, you're now ready to activate and use QuickBooks when tracking your entries.
You can always leave a comment below if you have any other follow-up questions. I'm just a post away to help you again. Have a good one!
If the seller fails to respond, ask for a refund immediately. Support will not help resolve this issue.
My frustration is ALL with Quickbooks support and responses like yours! If you read my response, you would realize you CANNOT expect eBay to have any authorization code. eBay is NOT the seller....they are just a platform, for sellers. I contacted the seller and they knew NOTHING of any code...which is why I had to start a return, to get a refund. ANY frustration here, really lies with your "canned" (or uninformed) responses and the Quickbooks Support NOT knowing that this has been an issue. When people call into support, to mention the problem they're having...they should have notes in the system that immediately pop up, to let them know this is something QB cannot resolve (apparently)...and that the buyer should go back to their purchase point. Instead, they keep you on the phone for hours, only to come to the same result/conclusion. Pathetic, for a company of this size.
