I know it can be difficult when you can't locate your file. I'm here to help you with that.

Before proceeding, may I know how you back up your accounting data? This way, I'll be able to ensure you can easily locate your backup.

If you save your data manually or automatically in QuickBooks, you can select where you want to keep them. For more details, please see this article: Back up your QuickBooks Desktop Company File.

However, if you're using Intuit Data Protect (IDP), you can visit the  View Backup History page to see the chronological list of your backups, from oldest to newest. To learn more, you can check out this article: Change Intuit Data Protect Backup Settings or View Status and History.

Also, please note that QuickBooks uses C:\Users\Public\Public Documents\Intuit\QuickBooks\Company Files as a default location when saving your files. Though, you'll still be asked where you want to keep them.

Additionally, I've included an article that'll help you use your backup data to bring back your company file into the program: Restore a Backup of your Company File.

Please let me know if you need additional help in restoring your file. I'm here to ensure you can start working on your books again.

I backup the company files/data on a USB Drive.  Until recently each time I would back up the file location was already saved so I could just click finish.  Now every time I go to back up I have to find the file location on the USB drive and then finish the back up process.

Just trying to figure out why QB is not saving the file location.

Thanks for getting back with the Community, MKTGPTRS.

You can specify where company file backups are saved in your Create backup options.

Here's how:

  1. In the top menu bar, go to File, then Back Up Company.
  2. Choose Create Local Backup.
  3. Click Options.
  4. Use your Browse button to let QuickBooks know where to save the files.
  5. Hit OK.
  6. Select Next and follow your presented steps to finish backing up.

I've also included a detailed resource about backing up company file data which may come in handy moving forward: Back up company files

Please don't hesitate to send a reply if there's any additional questions. Have a lovely day!

That is what I have done for years, and until recently it would always save the file location so I didn't have to browse for it every time.  Ijust want it to save location again...it's a pain to redo it all the time.
