Barcodes for inventory

OK, I have the barcode feature enabled in Quickbooks inventory, and I have a barcode scanner. now what do i do? I want to use it to count our inventory and eventually begin using it to populate invoices. where do I begin? do I just go and scan the barcodes? I let QB generate barcodes for my products, and printed them out as labels and put them on my items ( test items) so how do i get the info into quickbooks? help. I am completly lost??? Natalie C.

Re: Barcodes for inventory

Hey there, @natalie4.

Great work on enabling the barcode scanning feature. To continue, you can generate the barcodes for your items by setting it up. Here’s how:

  1. In the Advanced Inventory Settings window, click on Open Barcode Wizard.
  2. From the drop-down, choose whether you’ve tracked barcodes before or not.
  3. Click on Next.
  4. Select the items you want to generate barcodes for.
  5. Click on Next.
  6. Select Finish.
  7. Click on OK.

Once done, you can now print out the labels for your items with the barcode you generated within QuickBooks.

Also, generating the barcodes within QuickBooks save you some time from entering the information manually.

I’ll be attaching an article here about using the barcode scanning feature.

Please don’t hesitate to let me know if you have any other questions or concerns. I’ll be happy to help.

Re: Barcodes for inventory

This still does not help me. I am completely set up, I have barcodes for all my products, and have a scanner. I need to know what to do now, I can go into my warehouse and scan all day long, but then what? how do I get the info into QuickBooks? do I need to import it? do I need to install an additional program that will get my scans from the scanner into QuickBooks? these are the things I need to find information about, not how to set it up. I have already done that.....

Re: Barcodes for inventory

Thanks for getting back to us, @natalie4.

There's no need to import information or install an additional application. QuickBooks will automatically replace or generate the barcode in the program once you scan the item.

If you want to change the QuickBooks generated barcode, please refer to these steps below:

1. Go to the Lists menu at the top.
2. Pick Item List on the drop-down.

3. Open an item, then start scanning.

If you encounter any error during the process, I recommend checking out the article provided by my colleague above and scroll down to Common issues and unexpected results for the steps on how to fix it.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions or concerns. I'll be happy to answer them. Have a great day!
