Hi there, ndarby,

I've got the steps to help fix the challenges you’ve encountered upon closing QuickBooks Desktop.

You can start by ending all running QuickBooks components on your Task Manager. This will help close the application.

Here’s what you’ll need to do:

  1. Go to your Task Manager then highlight all applications that start with .qbQuickBooks, or Intuit.
  2. At the bottom, click End Task.
  3. Close Task Manager window.

After that, there maybe damage to your company file. Suppressing it will fix the application.

  1. Press and hold the Ctrl key, then double-click the QuickBooks Desktop icon.Important: Don't release the Ctrl key until you see the "No Company Open" window unless QuickBooks freezes or gives you an error.
  2. Select a company file, then choose Open.

Also, I recommend installing and running the QuickBooks File Doctor tool. It will help you fix any unexpected issues within the company file.

Feel free to post again if there's anything else you need. The QuickBooks Community is always open to help.

Thank you and stay safe!

Hello.  I'm having a similar issue.  This is happening after I put in my password and get the Welcome message.  Then my app is just gray with a very small QB logo in the middle.  I have ended the task twice.  Any suggestions?

Hello there, @mnalaboff. Thanks for joining the thread and attaching a screenshot.

I’ve checked with my tools and didn’t find any open investigations about this. To isolate the issue, have you tried performing the troubleshooting steps shared by my colleague above? If you haven't yet, I suggest doing it so.

However, if the issue persists after performing the troubleshooting steps, I'd highly recommend contacting our Customer Care Team support. This way, they'll be able to check further the root cause of the issue.

To reach them, here's how:

  1. Open QuickBooks.
  2. Go to the Help menu at the top.
  3. Select QuickBooks Desktop Help
  4. Type Contact Us in the search box. Then, click on Contact Us at the bottom.
  5. Select the way you wish to connect with support.

Ensure to review their support hours, so you'll know when agents are available.

As always, you can visit our QuickBooks Community help website if you need tips and related articles in the future.

If you have any other concerns, you're more than welcome to reply here with the details. I'm here to help. Take care and have a great day.

Which Windows 10 version are you using? 21H1 or 21H2?
