Can I add a copy of QB Desktop Pro with Enhanced Payroll to to plain QB Desktop Pro to have a two user license?

I plan to buy another copy of QB Desktop Pro so that I can have two simultaneous users using it. I am thinking about handling our own modest payroll as well and that has me interested in QB Desktop Pro with Enhanced Payroll. Is the payroll piece separate where the two versions of QB Desktop Pro could act as the two licenses that I would need to work together (two simultaneous users)? I'm unclear if the versions have to be exactly the same. In that scenario that the two separate versions could coexist, would the Enhanced Payroll component work from only one of the installations?

Thanks for your help.

Let me ease your confusion, Davidaj.

You don't need two separate subscriptions for your two QuickBooks licenses. You only have to subscribe to one, and it will work simultaneously to the same company file.

Let me share this article on how you can activate your payroll: Activate QuickBooks Desktop Payroll.

So, it appears that QB Enhanced payroll is a service that is paid for monthly or annually. What am I buying when I get a copy of QB desktop Pro that includes enhanced payroll vs QB desktop Pro that doesn't include it? Does it include payroll services for a certain period of time before I start paying for it? I see that I have the option to sign up for payroll services from within my existing copy of QB Desktop Pro 2020

Thanks for checking in with us, davidaj.

You are right, QuickBooks Payroll is an add on service to your software that has an annual or monthly plan. This allows you to create unlimited paychecks, use free direct deposit, and file payroll taxes. To learn more about the payroll features in your QuickBooks, see QuickBooks Payroll Services and Features for QuickBooks Desktop article. From there, you'll see the payroll service comparison table and all the features included in the payroll plan you choose.

On the other hand, you have the option to sign up for payroll services from your existing QuickBooks. You can purchase it online or by phone. You can also reach out to our Payroll Service Team to have one. They'll pull up your account in a secure environment and help you with this one. You may send a message via chat, call us at a time convenient to you, or we’ll get in touch with you instead. To ensure we address your concern, our representatives are available from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM on weekdays and 6:00 AM - 3:00 PM on Saturdays, PST. See our support hours and types for more details about this one. Here's how to reach them:

  1. Click the Help icon on the top menu.
  2. Choose QuickBooks Desktop Help
  3. Tap Contact us.
  4. Select Search for something else and enter your concern in the Tell us more about your question: field.
  5. Tap Search
  6. Choose Start a Message or Get Phone Number to connect with our support.

Then, activate your Payroll service by entering the service key in QuickBooks Desktop. If you bought the Payroll service from a retail store, you must activate your payroll license online to get the service key. See Activating a payroll service purchased from a retail store.
