Can't open company file in Quickbooks for Mac

You'll want to update your QuickBooks Desktop for Mac to the latest release. Then, let's rename the file or move it to a new location to fix this error. Here's how to rename it:

1. Open the New Finder window and locate your company file.
2. Go to the File menu, and then select Rename.
3. Create a new name, and then click OK.

Once done, open the company file again. If the same thing happens, proceed in moving it to a new location.

1. Go to the New Finder window and locate your file.
2. From the Edit, choose Copy and paste the file to another folder. Hover to Edit again, and then choose Paste.
3. Open your QuickBooks, and then pick Browse.
4. Look for the new location of the file, and then tap Open.

Then, you can delete the file from the original location. Go back to the New Finder window, and then drag the file to the Trash icon.

Thanks for dropping by the Community today. To clarify, the issue is that your software needs to be updated to the latest release. Like a cellphone or tablet, eventually they need to update. This update comes from the developers, in this case its QuickBooks and that update provides changes, fixes and standard maintenance to make sure your software works properly. Until the software is updated it won't function at its best and in some cases not at all. I'm including a link with detailed steps for you to follow along with the update process down below:

How is it that the program ended working without notice, what if I need to urgently access my company file?

Do I need to upgrade to Quickbooks 2021 to be able to open my file? 

I just checked my updates and it says that the current version is up to date. 

QuickBooks 18.0.9.3424 R10 is currently the newest version available.

Let's perform some troubleshooting steps to isolate the issue. Before we start, it's recommended to always create a backup copy of your company file before doing any changes to ensure you have an original copy and restore it anytime.

Then, let's verify and rebuild your QuickBooks data. This will help you identify company file data issues as well as resolves those issues found. Follow along below to get this done right away:

1. Go to File, then select Utilities.
2. Click Verify Data, then OK to close all windows. If you see “Your data has failed the integrity check” you need to rebuild your file. If there are no problems with your data, you’re done.
3. Once your data is verified, you can now rebuild your company files, refer to the next steps.
4. Navigate to File menu, then choose Utilities.
5. Pick Rebuild Data, then select OK to close all windows.
6. QuickBooks will ask to make a backup before rebuilding your company file, tap OK.
7. Once finished, hit OK.

When done, open your company file again. If the issue persists, I recommend consulting our QuickBooks Desktop for Mac technical support team. This way, they can further investigate the root cause of the issue and can also do a screen share to check your setup. Let me guide you on how:

I noticed you were able to open the sample file. To isolate the issue, try create a dummy file to make sure. If you were able to do so, it is possible your working and backup file is corrupted. How big is your file size? 

Thank you. The file size is 31.5mb. Yes, I was able to open a sample file. I am not sure why even the backup files are not opening, I tried opening really old backups from last June 2020.

Thank you all. I direct downloaded a new copy of my company file from my Google Drive and I was able to open the file. The weird thing is that my backups were stored locally and the live company file on Google Drive, accessed by Google Stream. Quickbooks had an issue opening both local and drive files. Downloading a new copy fixed the issue. 

We only recommend to utilize GDrive to secure or share your backup file. Don't put your working file on it. The platform doesn't support QuickBooks and your file may be corrupted again in the future.

In September I downloaded a second copy of 2019 Quickbooks Desktop to my macbook pro.  I wanted a backup for my 2008 IMAC.  I had no difficulties using a Google Drive backup file to open and set up my company.

I decided to update my latest backup file from Google Drive on my laptop. on 11/7/2021.  The error I get is “the document could not be opened”.  I used “Utilities” - Verify Data- and got a “failed integrity” check message.  I then used “Utilies” - Rebuild Data - and got an “error occurred while rebuilding your data”.

Both 2019 Quickbooks Desktops (same license) have been updated to the newest release for 2019.  Please advise.
