Can you import item list into Quickbooks Desktop and keep the line breaks in Description field from excel?

I am able to import a list to Quickbooks Online with a .csv by adding a \ where I want the new line to start...this doesn't seem work the same with Quickbooks Desktop though.  Any ideas?

Can you import item list into Quickbooks Desktop and keep the line breaks in Description field from excel?

Thanks for reaching out to us, mc78.

Let's get this straightened out so we can import a list into QuickBooks Desktop while keeping the line breaks in the Description field.

Since QuickBooks Online and QuickBooks Desktop are on different platforms, there's a different procedure in QB Desktop importing Items with Description.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the Lists menu at the top.
  2. Choose Add/Edit Multiple List Entries.
  3. Click the Customize Columns tab.
  4. Select the Sales Description and Purchase Description.
  5. Click Add.
  6. Click Ok.

I've got an article to learn more about modifying item list in QuickBooks Desktop: Add, edit, and delete items.

Attached are screenshots below so you can have a better view.

Please don't hesitate to get back to me if you have other questions about importing item list into QuickBooks. We'd love to help you some more.

Can you import item list into Quickbooks Desktop and keep the line breaks in Description field from excel?

Greetings, @mc78.

Thank you for posting in the Community.  I'd be happy to help share another way on how to import the item list into QuickBooks.

You can try the Advance Import process to bring the item list to QuickBooks Desktop. It's a mapping tool that'll allow you to choose which column in your spreadsheet matches the data you're importing. It also allows you to update a field or name for an item that's already in QuickBooks.

I recommend following the steps under Option 2: Advanced import in the Import or export MS Excel files article. Please see the steps based on the situation you are in.

If you need to reach out for more help, our phone agents will be able to help you get to a resolution quickly.

Here's how you can reach them:

  1. Go to https://help.quickbooks.intuit.com/en_US/contact
  2. Select your QuickBooks Desktop version at the top right.
  3. Select a topic.
  4. Click the green Get Phone Number button to see the support number.

That should point you in the right direction today.

Stay in touch if you have additional questions about importing item list into QuickBooks. I'll be happy to help you out.
