Cant get a quickbooks 2009 file to load into the 2017/2020 version. Please help my mom!

I don't use quickbooks but I'm making this post for my mom because she needs help. Yesterday, one of her PCs running Windows 7 and quickbooks 2009 crashed. She had the quickbook files she needed from that computer on an external hdd, but when she tried to load them to her win10 quickbooks 2020 none of the data from those files seemed to transfer over (the files showed up, but the data she needed was not there).

Its not possible to get back on the win7 PC to get any other files. So how can she take the files that she has and get them into quickbooks 2020 without losing all the work she's done?

Thank you.

I appreciate you posting this concern for your Mom, @nouser2020.

There may be sample files or older QuickBooks files that are current saved on the external hdd.

You can search all the Quickbooks file on your hdd using these steps:

  1. Make sure to plug in your external hdd drive.
  2. On your keyboard, click the Window key or the Window icon on the bottom left side of your monitor.
  3. Type in qbw and it will show you all QuickBooks related files.

If still, you're unable to find the correct QuickBooks files you're looking for, I recommend contacting our QuickBooks Desktop Support Team. They can help you in searching for your company file and will guide you further with the next steps needed to recover your files.

Here's a piece of additional information on how you can check the compatibility of your QuickBooks Desktop to your window: Windows 10 version for QuickBooks Desktop.

I would be happy to assist you further if you have additional questions. Have a great day!

@nouser2020

I am not sure you are able to open QBD 2009 file on QBD 2020 directly in one jump. You may install the trial license of QBD 2015 to convert it as the stepping stone prior to opening the converted file on QBD 2020. Otherwise, you may purchase a 3rd party conversion service
