Changing Non-inventory Items to Inventory Items in Desktop pro 2018

Thanks for your time posting in the Community, @mysanityisgone. Allow me to share some details about changing your inventory item to a non-inventory one.

Currently, the option to change the inventory type to non-inventory is unavailable. You can only change it between Inventory Part or Inventory Assembly. As a workaround, you can create a new non-inventory item and delete the inventory one.

This is how it looks like if you're going to change the inventory type:

Now, let's create a non-inventory item. I'd be happy to show you the steps:

  1. Go to the Inventory menu, select Inventory Center.
  2. Click the New Inventory Item icon and choose New Inventory Item.
  3. Select the Type drop-down and select Non-Inventory Part.
  4. Enter the details needed, such as the item name, price, and not limited to the account.
  5. Select OK to save the item. I've added some screenshots for additional reference:

Once done, you can check out the non-inventory items you've added in the Lists menu> Item List

Moreover, I've included an article for your future task about tracking transactions on your inventory and non-inventory items: Understand reports. This reference also contains more details about customizing your report to the next level for your business forecasts.

That's it. Please know that you can always tag my name if you have other questions or concerns. I'm here to help you in any way I can. Enjoy the rest of your day!

@mysanityisgone

Utilize a migration tool to do so. Export your Product and Service data to XLS, modify the Type in bulk, and import the data back into your file.

You've done a great job of explaining changing item types from Inventory to Non-Inventory, but the original inquiry was "changing Non-Inventory types to Inventory types".  Could you please provide the procedures for that, also, can it be done as a mass change from an XLS export file and re-imported?  Thank you.

Thanks for joining in on this discussion, ATWsteve.

I'm here to provide a detailed step-by-step guide for changing an item type in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT).

Currently, we're unable to modify the item type directly from Excel and re-import it to QBDT. We'll have to change them manually from non-inventory to inventory.

To do that:

  1. Go to the Lists menu.
  2. Select Item List.
  3. Double-click on the item you want to change.
  4. Click the Type dropdown and select Inventory.
  5. Select OK.

Moreover, QBDT adjusts inventory quantities and values when you keep track of each sale and purchase. However, there are instances where we have to record an adjustment to maintain an accurate inventory status.

Please don't hesitate to leave your questions below if you need additional assistance changing an item type. The Community is available 24/7 to help you.

Hi,

Does QBDT post an adjustment at the time you change item from non-inventory to inventory?  Or, will it only adjust for future transactions?

Thank you for joining the thread, Mary. I’ll share information about changing item classification in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT).

Changing Non-Inventory items to Inventory is possible. To do so, you’ll need to manually amend them by following the steps below:

  1. Go to the List menu and select Item List.
  2. Look for the item you want to change classification with by tapping it twice.
  3. Click the Type dropdown and select Inventory.
  4. Lastly, click OK.

Concerning your second question, QBDT won’t automatically adjust nor retroactively applied to your previous transaction and will only take effect on future transactions. You’ll want to take a visit to this article to adjust your inventory quantities for accurate tracking.

Feel free to post back if you have more questions about managing your inventories. I’m always here to help. Have a good one!

This does not work.

When I select the Item, and open it up, the Type dropdown menu only provides for Service, Non-Inventory Part, or Other Charge.

There is no selection available for Inventory part.
