Chart of Accounts - Parents & Subs

I think I already know the answer to this question, but I'll ask anyway:

Is there a way to designate Parent/Sub accounts in the COA  when importing/exporting the COA?

Hi there, @Michael1537,

Yes, you're able to map your CSV file to import sub-accounts in QuickBooks Online. All you need to do is add the sub-level account under the Account Name column. See the format here:

For mapping samples, click this link to download our sample spreadsheets. Once you're ready, follow these steps to start the import process:

  1. Go to Settings ⚙ and then Import Data.
  2. Choose Chart of Accounts, and then Browse.
  3. Then, find and select the spreadsheet you saved.
  4. Select Next.

Chart of Accounts - Parents & Subs

Hi There!

I'm working in QBO. I want to download the Chart of Accounts from one company and upload it to a new QBO file. I want the sub-accounts to automatically link. From what I understand from the above, this is possible.

Is the correct divider - or : ?

For example

ABOVE THE LINE:Production

Or

ABOVE THE LINE-Production

Whereas, Production G/L account would be a sub-account of ABOVE THE LINE G/L account.

Thanks for your help.

I believe the colon works to separate parent and child.
