Chart of accounts

Hi,

We are trying to edit the "Type" under chart of accounts from "Accounts Payable A/P" to "Credit Card" for an individual account. There is nothing currently booked there and when we go to change the "Type" it gives us an error message of You cannot change the detail type of an account to "Accounts Payable (A/P)" or change an "Accounts Payable (A/P)" account to another detail type.

How can we get around this error to change the type?

Thanks

Providing the best experience with the product is what we aim for, @TmillerDP.

The Account Types and Detail Types lists are built-in and fixed functions within QuickBooks Online. Hence, we cannot change or edit these default accounts. They are automatically created based on your business identity.

Everyone gets the same set of standard accounts. If you want to manage detail types, we can only suggest that you choose the closest detail type to the one you're looking for. Take note that by doing this, it may affect your business accounting and reporting.

If you still want to update your account's detail type in your Chart of Accounts, I'd recommend consulting your accountant to keep your books accurate.

To learn more about how to use detail types for your Chart of Accounts in QuickBooks, kindly refer to this article. It also contains an explanation of what detail types to use when adding a new account.

For reference, you can check out this article to understand the chart of accounts in QuickBooks. This will help you handle multiple accounts.

In case you need to match and categorize your transactions, you can refer to this link. Then, you can view this article to reconcile your account. This way, we can make sure that your statements coincide with QuickBooks.

Feel at ease to drop a comment below if you have any QuickBooks concerns. I'd always be glad to help if you need further assistance with your COA. Take care.

Chart of accounts

Hi,

We added a new account to our chart of accounts but put the wrong "Type" in. We can't edit this now. Is there a way around this?

Chart of accounts

Thank you for getting back to us, @TmillerDP. Let me share with you some ideas about the chart of accounts in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

Since you mentioned in your initial post that there was nothing booked on that account, what we can do is to make that inactive and then recreate the correct one.

Here’s how you can make an account inactive:

  1. Go to Settings and select Chart of accounts.
  2. Find the account you want to delete.
  3. Select the Action ▼ dropdown and select Make inactive.

You also have the option of seeing inactive accounts. You can check that out by clicking this link.

Once done, you can then refer to this article about adding an account to your chart of accounts in QuickBooks Online.

When creating the account, you can also refer to your accountant for guidance on what type to choose.

For future reference, I added this following articles to help you with categorizing and reconciling your account in QuickBooks Online.

Let me know if you need further assistance in your chart of accounts. I’m just one post away from assisting you. Have a great day!
