Crash

I have two companies on my QB.  I use QB 2016, and do not use online services.

On one company only, each time I hit enter the program closes and opens a crash catcher email window asking for what is taking place when the crash happens.  I have filled it out several times with never any response.  Now I just keep reopening until I get my work done in that company.

I don't know what to do.  The other company has no issues.

Any suggestions?

We can perform some troubleshooting steps to fix the Crash Catcher error in QuickBooks for Mac, OBTEAA.

The Error Catcher occurs when QuickBooks encounters an unexpected issue. Let's try restarting your computer to give it a fresh start. Then, update your QuickBooks for Mac to the latest release version to make sure you have all the software improvements and bug fixes. Once done, run the Verify and Rebuild utility to identify data issues and fix them in your software. Let me show you how:

  1. Go to the File menu, then select Utilities.
  2. Select Verify Data. If a problem is detected, go back to the File menu, then select Utilities.
  3. Choose Rebuild Data.
  4. Run Verify Data again.

If it still detects a problem, restore a backup, and run your computer in Safe Boot mode. This helps us figuring out if there’s a conflict between QuickBooks and something installed on your computer. Just follow Solution 4 in the Troubleshoot Crash Catcher article. Then, proceed to the next solution to troubleshoot the problem.

Feel free to visit our Install, upgrade, and register page for more insights about installing, upgrading, activating, and registering Intuit products.

I'd like to know how you get on after trying the steps, as I want to ensure this is resolved for you. Please reply to this post and I'll get back to you. You have a good one.

Those are all great suggestions and you should try them first. It also will help to know which macOS version you are using. If you are using Big Sur for instance its likely that 2016 is not compatible as its unsupported. In that case your best bet is to upgrade to QuickBooks Mac 2021 which is Big Sur compatible.

Another tip is sometimes a window that QB is trying to open on launch is crashing. In that case you can open your file without opening any of the last used windows.  To do this hold down the command and option keys while launching QuickBooks.  That will open QB without opening your company file.  Next select your company file (it should be listed in the "No Company Open" window) _while_ holding down the option key. This should open the company file without opening any windows. With luck it will no longer crash (at least until that particular window is re-opened).

Thank you very much for your response.
I am very computer illiterate. However, I did make sure my version of QB was up to date for the 2016 version, and could never find anything about updating a server.
I updated my MAC to Big Sur, and now QB won’t even open ....bad choice I guess.
My question now is can I purchase QB for mac 2021 and all of my data will automatically transfer or do I have to perform surgery etc, or do I have to uninstall the Big Sur and update QB then install Big Sur??????

No one is available by phone so I am very thankful that you may be able to help me.

Thanks for getting back to us and sharing some updates about this, @OBTEAA,

I want to make sure you're able to access your company file without any issues.

Our engineers recently released an update for QuickBooks Mac 2021 to work on Big Sur. There is no need to uninstall the latest MacOS  version on your PC, and you should be able to open your company file after upgrading.

If it doesn't, let's try removing the preferences file:

1. Quit QuickBooks if it's running.

2. In the Finder, hold the option key down and choose Go >Library menu.

3. Once the library window opens, double-click the Preferences folder.

4. Drag the com.intuit.quickbooks20xx.plist file to the trash (where xx is the year of the QuickBooks version)

5. Once done, relaunch QuickBooks.

If you're still unable to open QuickBooks, I recommend contacting our Technical Support for QuickBooks Mac. Our representatives can take a look at the problem and diagnose the company file on what's causing this behavior.

Let me know how it goes. I want to keep track of this topic and make sure it gets taken care of. I'm also here if you ever need further help with any other things in QuickBooks. Have a good one!

Glad to have you back, @OBTEAA,

Do you have a backup copy of the other company file that didn't transfer? We can use that to restore the data to the new QuickBooks version.

If you have, try to find it on the computer where it was saved prior to upgrading the software. Here's how you can search for it.

  1. Click the QuickBooks menu, then select Preferences.
  2. Choose Backup.
  3. Pick the Reveal Backup Folder, then double-click the folder where you save your backup files.
  4. You can select Date Modified to sort by date and see your most recent backup. The backup company should be in this format "Your business name.qb2020."

When you find it, you can now restore it to the 2021 file. The steps are listed in this article: Restore your backup company file for QuickBooks Desktop for Mac

If you're unable to find the back up and can't open the old file, I recommend contacting our Technical Support for QuickBooks Mac. Our representatives can help with restore the data and make sure you're able to access the file without any problems.

Ok I got it in there but times 2!  I picked the wrong back up and then had to choose another to get the  latest data.

How do I get rid of the one I don't need and how do I get rid of these icons on my home screen?

Can I delete the QB 2016, and if so how?

Thank you again so much!!!

Hello @OBTEAA, happy Monday! Hope you had a great weekend. :)

You can delete the old company file by right-clicking (control+click) on the company file and select "Move to Trash". Those same steps will also delete QuickBooks 2016 from your computer.

The icons are not customizable, so they can't be arranged or deleted, but I'll definitely get that feedback to our developers.

If there's anything else you need, please don't hesitate to reply to this post. We're all happy to help!
