Deleting an item from inventory that was a mistake

Found this question that is exactly what I need to know but the reply was for QuickBooks Destop and I need an answer for Quickbooks Online. Does anyone know how to delete an item on Quickbooks Online? Accidentally entered same item twice

Can I completely delete an inventory item entered by mistake and has not been used in any transaction? When I try to delete, the only option I get is to make it inactive

@dal1cas2

Unfortunately, you can't delete inventory items in QuickBooks Online.
In fact, in QBO, you can't permanently delete (items, customers, vendors, accounts). You can just make it inactive.

Even when I make one of the items inactive, it is still showing as part of my inventory. How do I remove it from the balance sheet and inventory summary?

If the item has zero qty and zero value, then it sits there as inactive and affects nothing financially

However if you entered the same item twice with qty and cost both times, that is a problem.

since when you add an item with qty and value, the offset for that addition to asset value is posted to opening balance equity - you need to remove that entry
there are two ways to do it

1. use the register for the inventory asset account, find the entry for that item titled START, and either delete that entry, or edit it to show zero qty and zero value/cost (rarely does delete work in the register)

or

2. use inventory adjust, set the adjusting account to opening balance equity, lower the qty to zero
