Join nowHi - I just purchased QB Accountant Desktop 2021. I opened a 2018 client file in Accountant Desktop 2021, because I had been told by an accountant that you could do that. I got a message of "Now that you've upgraded..." Is this going to charge the client? He will probably actually go to QBO for 2021!
Solved! Go to Solution.
If you are using QBD Accountant 2021, you may open a QBX file created on QBD 2020. Your client doesn't need to upgrade their version. If your client sent you a QBW/QBB/QBM file created on QBD 2019 or older, your QBD 2021 will upgrade it. Your client won't be able open the converted file. You may need purchasing a 3rd party downgrade service to restore it.
Thanks for checking in with us, GG69.
Ideally, the client and accountant using the Accountant's Copy feature should use the same version or year of QuickBooks Desktop. Though you can still work on the Accountant's Copy using a different version as long as the gap between the versions is just one year, and the accountant has a more recent version. For more details about this one, see the Use the Accountant's Copy article.
On the other hand, your client will be only charged if they will upgrade their QuickBooks to the latest version. To learn more about company file compatibility to avoid issues and errors when upgrading the software, see the Company file compatibility with QuickBooks Desktop when upgrading article for more details.

Unfortunately I wasn't using an accountant's copy, but the actual file. I was able to open the file just fine. I received a message "Now that you've upgraded..."
Thank you.
