Enterprise Won't Open Second Company File

Until a week ago, I could open two company files in QuickBooks Enterprise.  Now when I try to open the second company file QB shows an error that Only QuickBooks Accountant and QuickBooks Enterprise can open two company files at once.  Only two computers in our company are getting this error everyone else can still open two company files.  What's wrong?  Thanks.

Enterprise Won't Open Second Company File

I'll share a few steps to fix this issue, Variscite.

First, let's update QuickBooks to the latest release. It will download all updates and critical fixes of the software.

Next, let's check the file we're opening. There are a lot of file types in QuickBooks Desktop. Let's open the company file with a .qbw extension at the end of the file name.

If it didn't make any difference, let's figure out what's causing the issue. It could be the company file or the QuickBooks program itself. You can follow these steps:

  1. Click the Windows menu.
  2. Type "File Explorer" into the search bar and open File Explorer.
  3. Find the QuickBooks.exe file.
  4. Hold down the CTRL key on your keyboard, then double click QuickBooks.exe. Don't let go of CTRL until the software opens.

Once QuickBooks opens, open the second company file. If you're still unable to do so, open a sample file.

If the sample file won't open, the program is causing the issue. You'll have to fix QuickBooks if it doesn't open
