Error importing deposit with multiple income accounts

I am trying to import a deposit which has several income accounts tied to it.  I get an error "The sum of the amounts in the transaction header and distribution line must be zero [11087]".  There are 5 lines associated with the deposit in the IIF file.  The total amount is the first line for the grand total of the deposit and the remaining 4 lines are income accounts which should import to the From Account field.  This is for QB Pro 2019.

Error importing deposit with multiple income accounts

Hello @amb11,

Welcome to the Community. Let me help you get rid of the error message when importing data to QuickBooks Desktop.

You usually encounter an error if the format of the content is incorrect. I recommend downloading the sample IIF file specific for deposit type transactions.

This way, you can check how to upload the data successfully. To download the file, please visit this article: IIF Overview: import kit, sample files, and headers.

I've also attached an article you can use to secure a backup copy in QuickBooks: Back up your QuickBooks Desktop company file.

Drop me a comment below if you have any other questions on importing data. I'll be happy to help you some more.

Error importing deposit with multiple income accounts

I have hundreds of other transactions in the file that import successfully (general journals, checks and deposits).  Only the one deposit with multiple income accounts does not import.  The import kit is of no help.  Reading many forums, I see that the "improved" IIF causes more problems with IIF files that have been importing with no issue before.  I am unable to find any information on the error message I am getting from the QB website or any other IIF related sites.

Thanks for getting back to us, @amb11.

The improved Import IIF tools help eliminates the possibility of importing bad data by scanning your file for errors.

QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) gives you the option to review and resolve the errors found in the .IIF file. Here's how:

  1. Select Review now.
  2. Look for ERROR to see what the problem(s) with the file is.
  3. Correct the errors and Save.
  4. If you want to keep the file type, pick Yes.
  5. Close the File not imported window.
  6. Import the new, corrected .IIF file.

To learn more about the improved IIF import tool, consider checking out this article: Improved IIF Import in QuickBooks 2019 and later.

For more insights about managing IIF files in QBDT, visit this article: Export, import, and edit IIF files.

Please know that I'm only a post away if you have any other issues or concerns. I'll be more than willing to help. Have a good one!

Error importing deposit with multiple income accounts

Those instructions are widely available online and have been followed.  I am asking if it is possible to import a deposit with multiple income accounts.  The import tool kit only shows simple (2 accounts) import and nowhere does it address posting for multiple accounts.  The error is that the header and distribution line must equal zero and it does.

Thanks for getting back to us, @amb11

As of now, the option to import deposits with multiple accounts is not possible in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT). As a way around, you’ll want to look for a third-party app that integrates with QuickBooks that lets you import the deposit.

To do so, you can go to the App Center inside your software and look for an app from there. You can also visit our QBDT Apps center page for additional reference.

In regards to the error you’re having in importing the IIF file, you can follow the steps shared by colleague FritzF above. If the issue persists, I recommend running our QBDT Tool Hub. This tool scans your software for issues and fixes them right away. Let me show you how.

  1. Close your QuickBooks.
  2. Download our QuickBooks Tool Hub
  3. Open the file you downloaded (QuickBooksToolHub.exe).
  4. Follow the on-screen steps to install.
  5. When the install finishes, double-click the icon on your Windows desktop to open the tool hub.
  6. Click Company File Issues.
  7. Select Quick Fix my file.
  8. Simply click QuickBooks File Doctor tool.

You can also check this article for more details: Fix common problems and errors with the QuickBooks Desktop Tool Hub.

Once you’re done importing those deposits, you might want to refer to this article on how to categorize them: Add and match Bank Feed transactions in QuickBooks Desktop.

You’re always welcome to post a reply if there’s anything else you need help with your account. I’ll be around to help and back you up. Keep safe!

Error importing deposit with multiple income accounts

Thank you!  What is interesting is that I had more files to import after I got this error and the deposits with multiple income accounts in those files imported with no issue.  They are almost identical (with the exception of the amount and memo) to the transaction that I received the error on.  All headers and format are exactly the same.  Based on this, we will just manually enter those that fail.  Thanks for your help, JasroV!
