When I try to change a name in the other names list to a vendor, first it says it must close all windows, then says it must i get an error message and quickbooks

Have you run the Verify/Rebuild Data utility? How big is your file size?

I'm new to this and just starting to enter info, so I doubt the file size is very big. 

should I try that?

Yes, you can perform the verify and rebuild process to self-identity and resolve the most commonly known data issues within your company file.

 

Here's how:

 

  1. Go to the File menu, then click Utilities.
  2. Select Verify Rebuild
    • If you see:
      • "QuickBooks detected no problems with your data," no further action is needed.
      • For a specific error message, there may already be an article for it. Try searching for one in our QuickBooks Desktop support site for specific instructions.
      • "Your data has lost integrity," indicates there is data damage in the file.  Continue to the steps below to Rebuild Data to correct the problem.

 

  1. Tap Utilities from the File menu.
  2. Choose Rebuild Data, then choose OK to close all windows.
  3. QuickBooks will ask to make a backup before rebuilding your company file, select OK.
  4. Once done, hit OK.

After that, you can close, then re-open QuickBooks. From there, update the name type again.
