Export QBO company file to Desktop in 2021

Hello.

I'm hoping for an answer from an Intuit representative on this one.

I am an ETL developer who migrates data to and from various systems as my clients' needs dictate.  Some of my clients use Quickbooks Online, which as a closed system with no back-end access, makes migration a challenge.

A solution I've used for several years now has been requesting a Quickbooks Desktop company file on my client's behalf.  I can then use an ODBC connector to gather the data my client needs.

As recently as October of last year, a client and I went through this process and Intuit was accommodating, providing us with the necessary company file within a few hours of the request.  That same client and I tried repeating the process just today and have found the "more info" link under "Desktop" in the data export section of QBO now links to a useless support page that suggests exporting your data in Excel format.  Not at all what we needed.

After some digging, we found the data export request form at https://c71.qbo.intuit.com/app/exportqbodatatoqbdt ... the link was provided in these forums by an Intuit employee responding to someone else's difficulties with the data export process.  While the form will accept our request, an email is sent to the client almost immediately afterward, stating something has gone wrong and the export attempt failed.

Is Intuit no longer supporting the data export feature?  Or are we going about it in the wrong way?  It seems Intuit wants to obfuscate this feature to make it as difficult as possible to use, which is exceedingly frustrating.  My client is at her wits' end.  Any assistance Intuit or the community can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Export QBO company file to Desktop in 2021

Thanks for being detailed about your concern, DanielPurdy.

Let me route you in the right direction, so you can export your QBO file to QuickBooks Desktop 2021.

The desktop version still supports the export feature. There’s some important information to know before exporting data files from QuickBooks Online to Desktop. Make sure to follow the suggestions to ensure a seamless conversion process.

  • Exporting QuickBooks Desktop is only available in the US version.
  • You must be a Master Administrator, Company Administrator, or invited accountant to use the export feature.
  • Use a computer with Internet Explorer 10 or higher.
  • You must have a supported version of QuickBooks Desktop for Windows installed on the PC where you’re performing the export process.

To ensure you’ll receive the email, type your email address and use Internet Explorer when doing this task. If you have the correct browser and email information, I recommend you get in touch with our Technical Support Team for further assistance.

They have tools to help them identify the cause of the unexpected behavior. Then, assist in applying the permanent solution to ensure you’re able to move your online company to the desktop program.

Here’s how:

  1. Click on the Help icon at the top menu bar to select QuickBooks Desktop Help F1.
  2. In the Have a Question window, scroll down to choose the Contact us link.
  3. This will display the Contact Us screen.
  4. Go to the Tell us more about your question section to enter the issue or topic in the field box.
  5. Press the Search button to display the Get Phone Number or Start a Message button.

For future reference, this link contains a complete list of information that doesn’t come over when you move QBO to QBDT. Additionally, this guide provides detailed instructions on how to transfer your online data to the desktop program: Export and convert your QuickBooks Online data to QuickBooks Desktop.
