Fixed asset manager not working after Windows 11

We switched from windows 10 to windows 11 and now fixed asset manager isn't working.  It prompts me to either restore a client, transfer a client or create new client.  Our IT guy tried to fix it but couldn't.  He had an old backup from 2024 and it wouldn't load.  He said something about it had to be restored using an older version of QB?  I don't know.  When I try and call QB they don't support it since fixed asset manager is a 3rd party software add on.  Anyone else run into this issue?  Any ideas?

Fixed asset manager not working after Windows 11

Thanks for reaching out to the Community, richardL.

I can confirm QuickBooks Fixed Asset Manager is still an official Intuit product as of February 5th, 2026. This feature is available in QuickBooks Accountant and Enterprise.

When you upgrade your books or install QuickBooks on a new computer, you'll need to upgrade or move the fixed asset data. Each company file has its own fixed asset folder. Depending on how many clients you have, you might have to go through multiple folders to find the correct fixed asset manager file.

Here's how to find the right one:

  1. Make sure you save a backup of your company file before transferring the client file.
  2. Open your client's company file.
  3. Go to Accountant (or Company if you're using Enterprise), then Manage Fixed Assets.
  4. Access Tools, then Program Options.
  5. Click General, uncheck Automatically compress client, then hit OK.
  6. Open File Explorer and browse to C:\Users\Public\Documents\Intuit\QuickBooks\Company Files.
  7. Look for the "FAMXX" folder. "XX" is the number for the previous QuickBooks version used to open the client file.
  8. Open your FAMXX folder and look for the client file. The name of your client file will likely be something like "{0000xxx".

If you see no client file listed to transfer:

  • You're on a workstation and not the server where you store the file.
  • You didn't browse to C:\Users\Public\Documents\Intuit\QuickBooks\Company Files\FAMXX\Clients. Where "XX" is the number for your previous version of QuickBooks.

In the event you still don’t see the file to transfer, try repairing your books. If that doesn’t work, re-install QuickBooks.

There's a few additional solutions covered in our Upgrade or Move fixed asset data article. I'd recommend starting with Solution 1: Upgrade the fixed asset file if the message continues displaying.

Please don't hesitate to send a reply if there's any additional questions. Have a wonderful Thursday!

Fixed asset manager not working after Windows 11

Hi Thanks - however we didn't know we had to save a copy before upgrading to windows 11.  Anyway we did find a FAM backup from Feb 2024 on our hard drive but we had trouble restoring that.  How do we restore that copy?  Any tips?   I can just recreate the rest of 2024 and 2025 as there weren't a lot of transactions.  I guess I need to know how to restore from the hard drive from Feb 2024;  Please advise.  Thx

Good morning, @richardL

Thanks for reaching back out and giving us additional information.

Before moving forward, you could explain the process you took to try to restore that copy, and afterwards did it give you any error messages etc?

In the meantime, I recommend reviewing this guide on how to restore a backup of your company file

I'll be waiting for your response!
