How can I delete inactive accounts with no transactions from the chart of accounts so that they do not clutter up the list of inactive accounts? This is a bug!

I am new to QBO, and have accidentally created some accounts in the chart of accounts that are approximate duplicates of accounts that are present in the default list. I tried merging them, but they still appear in the list of inactive accounts. I cannot get rid of them! I see that others have the same complaint. Please fix this!

Hello there, David.

I certainly understand how challenging it can be to deal with a cluttered inactive list right as you're getting started. QuickBooks Online (QBO) doesn't allow you to completely delete accounts, even if they are inactive with no transactions, to preserve data integrity.

While the inactive accounts can't be removed, you can filter your Chart of Accounts to display only active accounts. Here's how:

  1. In your Chart of Accounts, click the Gear icon.
  2. Under Settings, uncheck Include inactive.
  3. Doing this will display only active accounts and hide the inactive ones.
