How do I apply a discount to a customer invoice at time of payment?

I've got you covered, @kims. We can edit the invoice and enable the discount feature to apply a discount to your customer's invoice in QuickBooks Online (QBO). I'd be glad to show you how.

It's important to understand that discounts are typically applied to the invoice before you Receive payment in QBO, not directly during the payment process.

To keep your records accurate and consistent, you'll want to make the adjustments on the invoice itself and apply the discounts from there. This way, your data aligns appropriately. Here's how to do it:

  1. Open your customer's invoice.
  2. Click the Manage icon, then Payment options.
  3. Toggle on the Discount feature.
  4. Scroll down to the Discount section and either enter the percentage or the discount amount.

  1. Once done, hit Save.

After this, you can proceed to document the payment your customer has made.

As for any excess amount paid by your customer, you can either process a refund or apply that amount as a credit for future invoices.

To further enhance your QuickBooks experience, our QuickBooks Live Expert Assisted team can guide you on best practices for managing invoices and payments effectively.
