How do I change the category of an item I've already categorized I feel as though there's no way to uncategorize it and recategorize it

Changing an item's category in QuickBooks Online (QBO) after it’s been categorized can seem a bit tricky, Admin340. But don't worry, I'm here to guide you through the process.

In QuickBooks Online (QBO), categories help organize and classify products, services, and transactions, allowing for better reporting and analysis of your business data.

Here's a step-by-step process:

  1. Navigate to the Sales or Expenses menu depending on where the item you wish to recategorize is listed.
  2. Select Products and Services.
  3. Find the item you want to change and click Edit.
  4. In the category field, select a new category from the dropdown menu.
  5. Click Save to apply the changes.

If you want to remove a category without replacing it, you can categorize the transaction as Uncategorized. QBO typically requires a category for each item, so setting it as Uncategorized can act as a placeholder until you decide on the new category.

I'm sharing this article to organize your products and services in QBO: Group products and services into different categories in QuickBooks Online.
