How do I edit payroll catagories on prior checks

Hi, Ronpet47. You cannot change payroll categories from wages to salaries on past paychecks in QuickBooks Online. It is because payroll transactions are locked to comply with tax filing rules and prevent reporting errors. However, you can update employee settings for future paychecks or create reclassification adjustments.

For future checks, update the payroll settings. Here's the steps:

  1. Go to Payroll and select Employees.
  2. Tap the employee and then look for Base pay. After that, change the pay type from hourly wages to salary.

  3. Save the changes, and future checks will reflect the salary category.

To adjust payroll categories for prior checks, use payroll adjustments:

  1. Go to the Gear icon (located at the top-right corner).
  2.  Select Payroll Settings under the Payroll menu, then select Accounting. Locate the Wage expenses adjustment feature and reallocate amounts previously categorized as wages to the salaries category.

It ensures that past pay periods accurately reflect the salary classification.

RE: You cannot change payroll categories from wages to salaries on past paychecks in QuickBooks Online. It is because payroll transactions are locked to comply with tax filing rules and prevent reporting errors.

That's weird because in QuickBooks Desktop you can edit hourly wages and change them to salaried, exactly because the paychecks are locked, a feature which expressly allows doing just that and more. This it true because, in turn, changing the type of wages makes no difference at all when it comes to complying with tax filing rules and it causes no reporting changes or errors at all. Which you would know if you understood payroll reporting.

So, what you wrote doesn't hold water any more than a bucket doesn't have a bottom.

More correctly, QuickBooks Online can't handle it because Intuit hasn't built it, even though they built the ability into QuickBooks Desktop - the real QuickBooks - almost two decades ago.
