I can't email an invoice

I'm trying to email a customer an invoice like I have hundreds of time but I keep getting an error message.  I have restarted quickbooks, outlook AND my computer. . . .nothing.

I'm told that outlook isn't working right now.  Try again.

Any thoughts?

Let me welcome you to the Intuit Community, amdale.


This issue may occur when the email settings is incorrect, QuickBooks and Outlook installations are damaged. Aside from that, Outlook is open in the background when sending email through the desktop program.


Let’s review the setup and then configure the email preference to get you back on track. Here’s how:


  1. On your computer, go to the desktop and right-click beside the QuickBooks icon to select Properties.
  2. Choose the Compatibility tab and uncheck the box for Run this program as Administrator. If you’re unable to select it, pick Show Settings for All Users.
  3. Click OK and then restart QuickBooks.

Now, open the company file and try sending an invoice. If you get the same result, let’s go to the Send Forms window to view its settings.


  1. Go to the Edit tab to choose Preferences.
  2. From the left panel, tap the Send Forms menu to open the Preferences window.
  3. Under My Preferences, go to the Send e-mail section to select which emailing feature to use: Web Mail or QuickBooks E-mail.
  4. Click OK.

However, if your Outlook is set up correctly, toggle it to refresh the connection. For detailed instructions, follow the steps in the Error: QuickBooks is unable to send your email to Outlook article.


Proceed directly to Solution 2 and then go to Step 3. If the issue persists, follow the rest of the recommended solutions in the article above and perform the solutions 3, 4, and 5.

I'm trying to follow your suggestion but I can't even find the place to get to Properties.  When I right click beside the icon in the upper left corner of the program, I get the option of minimizing the page or not. . . can you provide some more direction.

To find the Properties menu, you'll have to close QuickBooks Desktop and right-click its shortcut icon. Then, follow the first set of steps shared by my colleague Rasa-LilaM.


If  you're still unable to send invoices via email, let's ensure that the preference is set correctly in Internet Explorer. Here's how:

  1. Close QuickBooks.
  2. Open Internet Explorer and go to Tools, then select Internet Options.
  3. Choose the Programs tab at the top and make sure the correct email is selected as the default one. Select the correct option, then hit Apply and OK.
  4. Close Internet Explorer.
  5. Open QuickBooks.
  6. Re-send the invoice once more.

I also suggest repairing the damaged MAPI32.dll. Follow the steps below:

  1. Close all open programs.
  2. Click Windows Start, then select Computer.
  3. Go to C:\Windows\System32.
  4. Double-click Fixmapi.exe and follow any on-screen instructions.
  5. Once done, restart your computer.

Just sitting down to deal with this. . . .I don't use internet explorer.  I use Chrome - does that matter?

I appreciate you getting back to the Community and doing a follow up. Let me help share additional information to ensure you'd able to send invoices.


Right now, QuickBooks uses Internet Explorer to run web services in the background. To help fix the error, I'd recommend using Internet Explorer. From there, reset your email preferences. You can follow the steps above provided by my colleague PreciousB.
