When moving QuickBooks to a new computer, you'll first want to start by installing QuickBooks on your new computer. I'm including the download link for the Pro 2012 version below. Please ensure you have your License and Product numbers before installation. You can locate these on your old computer by hitting the F2 key on your keyboard while in QuickBooks.
Please keep in mind that QuickBooks Desktop 2012 is one of the unsupported versions. This means that, although you can install it, it may not be compatible with your operating system. To install:
- Click on the green Download button.
- Locate the download and open it. If using Chrome, the download will be located in the upper right corner of the screen.
- Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation.
To move the company file:
- Follow the steps to create a backup company file on your original computer.
- When you save the backup file, give it a unique name so it's easy to identify. This also prevents accidental overwrites.
- Save the backup file somewhere you can easily find it, like your Windows desktop.
- Move the backup company file to your new computer. You can either put the backup on a flash drive or an external device. Or you can share it if your new computer is on the same network.
- Follow the steps to restore the backup on your new computer. Remember, it should have a unique file name.
