I have spaces in company file names, and see Error -6123,0 (QB Desktop)

My company files seem to be working fine... I would like to get rid of this pesky error that pops up when switching between company files ...but I don't want to break things.

The help page simply says:

Step 1: Remove special characters from the file name

Make sure your company file name:

  • Is 30 characters or less
  • Doesn't have any special characters or spaces

It doesn't explain how to fix the issue.

What I see:

The QuickBooks folder (with 2 company files), has multiple files and folders with the same company name, and other files that may (internally) refer to the existing file names.

What I need to know:

Is simply removing the spaces from the company file name enough?

Do all instances of the file and folder structure containing the company name with spaces simply need editing for removal of spaces?

Will QB Desktop program automatically fix other issues?

Is there other 'clean-up' work that needs to be done?

(rant...) Why did QB Desktop allow a company file name be created with spaces in the first place, if it will cause errors?

Sorry for the rant, and if someone knows what needs to be done that will not cause additional problems, please respond...

Thanks much

Removing spaces in your company name will not affect the file, @White Horse.

To resolve data integrity issues within the company file, we'll need to run the Verify and Rebuild data in your QuickBooks Desktop. Make sure to close all existing windows.

To verify the data here's how:

  1. Go to the File menu at the very top.
  2. Select Utilities on the drop-down menu and select the Verify Data option

To rebuild the data:

  1.  Go to the File menu at the very top.
  2.  Select Utilities on the drop-down menu and select the Rebuild Data option.
  3. You will receive a warning message to backup your company file, press OK.
  4. Click OK when you get the message "Rebuild has completed".

Run Verify Data again to check for remaining data damage.

You can read this article for more information: Verify and Rebuild Data in QuickBooks Desktop.

If you're getting the same problem after running the verify and rebuild, I'd suggest running a file doctor to repair your company file.

You can always leave a reply if you have any additional questions. I'll be happy to help. All the best.
