Join nowI've been using Quickbooks for years and I today just added a second company to my account. I used a travel drive to backup. I just a 2TB external HD to backup both companies on that instead of travel drive. After I got the company all setup with the company information I setup to store backups to the new HD. After I get everything done I keep getting this message. It's driving me insane because I don't know how to correct it and it won't allow me to do anything in QB. There isn't anything stored on this HD so it's not full.
The volume that contains your company is inaccessible and may be low on space. QuickBooks still has an updated copy of your company file that can be saved to a new location. Please choose a different location to save your company file.
Thanks in advance to whomever can help me with this.

Thanks for getting back here, @HeatherV971. I've got here additional steps to isolate the error.
To get rid of the error, you can simply click OK and save the file to your desktop. Let's also make sure that there's enough space storage on your desktop so you won't get the error again. Once done, close and re-open your QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) Mac program. Then, see if you still encounter the error. For your reference in creating a backup copy of your file, feel free to open this article: Back up your QuickBooks Desktop for Mac company file.
However, if the issue persists, I recommend reaching out to our Technical support team to further investigate the root cause of the error. They use specific tools to pull up your account and you can also request a screen-share session for them to check your setup.
You can also access our Help page to check guides and articles that will help your QuickBooks navigation. From here, you'll find a number of help articles and even video tutorials based on the QuickBooks feature you've searched. You can also bookmark them in your browser for easy access and use them as your future reference.
I'm always around if you have any other QuickBooks concerns. Feel free to post again here. Have a good one.
I don't use mac so I am guessing here, but are you saving each back up to a separate folder on that drive?
Use file explorer and check the drive, it could be that QB is not deleting the old back ups as desired and is just adding another file
It's good to have you here in the QuickBooks Community, Heather.
I'm joining the thread share some insights about the error message you're getting when accessing your company file.
If you're accessing files on a network-mounted drive you are using a networking protocol. These files aren't fully supported by Apple's CoreData which is used as the underlying database engine for QuickBooks Mac. It comes down to file locking protocols on the network OS which vary and have latency issues.
The safe and approved way to do is to run the QuickBooks Server application on the machine with the file and then have the clients access that over the network using the Multiuser connection built into QuickBooks. The server application ships with QuickBooks. Run that on the server machine, open the file, then have the QuickBooks client machines connect to the hosted file in Multiuser mode.
Even if you only have one license of QuickBooks Mac you can do this by quitting the QuickBooks client on one machine before launching it on another. The server stays running.

Thanks for jumping in a replying. So what I did was was I went to "file" and then "New Company" and I went from there. Did I not need to do that? I really don't care having to switch back and forth between two companies. I do only have one license. I guess now I'm a little confused on how to set this up. When I switch back to my original company it'll work fine because when the agent helped me set up my newest version several months ago she saved a file to my desktop and it's named under my first company so should I figure how to do the same for my second company? How she labeled it on my desktop is "my company name".qb2021 I just can't remember how she did all of that. Then I just wanted to be able to backup both companies to my external hard drive (made sure it was compatible for Mac) I honestly can't afford to purchase another QB (right now anyway) but now I'm feeling like this is more trouble than what it's worth.
