Layout Designer Freezing Desktop Pro 2018

Layout Designer keeps freezing when I try to Customize Data Layout. Using PC Desktop Pro 2018.


I copied an existing invoice template in order to make a customized template for a customer. Upon copying, I noticed that QB had reorganized the order of the columns, but only on the screen. Printing the invoice still shows columns in the correct order.  So, I went to Customize Data Layout to fix the problem. But clicking on the Description field always causes the program to freeze, and I have to End Task to get back into QB.  I have tried it probably 10 times now, and now the invoice template has decided to stop printing any data.  I'm going to stop banging my head on my desk and ask for help.  


I have checked for updates and am running the most current version of PC Desktop Pro 2018.

Let's perform other troubleshooting steps so you can customize an invoice template successfully and get this freezing behavior sorted out.


To get started, let's perform a mini repair on your QuickBooks by using the QuickBooks Refresher Tool. Here's how:


  1. Close all QuickBooks Desktop versions.
  2. Download the QuickBooks Refresher Tool.
  3. Save the file on your desktop.
  4. Run the QBRefresher tool.
  5. Re-open QuickBooks Desktop.

If you still get the same issue, let's use the QuickBooks Install Diagnostic Tool to fix the issue.


  1. Download the QuickBooks Install DiagnosticTool.
  2. When prompted, save the file to the local Desktop.
  3. Close any open programs and run the QBInstall Tool.
  4. Restart your computer after running the tool.
