Loading backups from 2009 into 2021 Quickbooks Pro Desktop

Trying to load backups of Quickbooks Pro 2009 into Quickbooks Pro 2021. Error codes: (-6094, 0).

I upgraded from an older PC to a new one. I purchased and installed Pro Desktop 2021. When I try to load backup files from my old 2009 Quickbooks Pro I get an error pop up (see image).

My new PC does have McAfee Virus software on it, and I am not seeing any files in quarantine.

Any ideas on what the issue could be?

Thank you

The issue is probably the 11 year jump you are trying to make.

You cannot even load 2009 as a program as it is too old to download.

If you purchased 2021 direct from Intuit they should be able to convert your file for free, contact support.

Thank you for the reply.

I purchased 2021 directly from Intuit. When I try to "Load from Backup" I get the -6094 error code.

Is there a conversion I need to do first?

I can help you restore your backup to your new software, danny3301.

The error (-6094,0) usually happens because anti-virus software such as PC Tools Internet Security, AVG Anti-Virus, and alike are blocking QuickBooks. I'll be providing a link that will walk you through the details on how to resolve the error: Error -6094, 0 (6010, 2) An error occurred when QuickBooks tried to start the database.

If you're still having the error after these troubleshooting steps, I suggest contacting us. Here's how:

  1. Go to Help and click QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  2. Click Contact us and enter a brief description of the error.
  3. Select Continue
  4. Choose a way to connect with us.

@danny3301

Your company file is too old. You may have 2 option:

1. Install the trial license of QBD 2011 and 2015 to convert your file prior to opening it on your QBD 2021.

2. Purchase a 3rd party conversion service.

Hello Catherine_B,

I just tried to restore the file again and got the same error. I updated my MacAfee anti virus with the instructions you provided. What other steps can I take to load these backup files? Do these files need to be converted to be able to load into QB 2021? Look forward to hearing back

Thank you

Hello Catherine_B,

I just tried to load the backup files again after following the instructions you provided. I updated the MacAfee anti virus software. It still did not work and I am getting the same error codes. Is there some file conversion that needs to be done to get QB 2009 backups to load into QB 2021 and can you provide that service? Look forward to hearing back.

Thank you

Let me share some details on how to fix this error, danny3301.

Aside from the anti-virus which is the possible reason for this error, we'll also encounter issues when opening older files to a newer version of QuickBooks Desktop. Let's upgrade your company file so you can keep using it and so you can access it on Quickbooks Desktop Pro 2021.

First, open the file you want to upgrade using the original version of QuickBooks. Then, run the Rebuild Tool to prepare it for the next step. Also, make sure to create a backup company file cause you won't be able to open it in the original version of QuickBooks after you upgrade it.

Once done, please follow these steps:

  1. Open the new version of QuickBooks Desktop and select Open or Restore Company or go to the File menu, then select Open or Restore Company.
  2. Click Open a company file, then Next
  3. Find the file you want to upgrade. Select it and click Open.
  4. Select Update Now to start the upgrade Tap Done when it finished.

You can check the detailed steps in this link: Upgrade your company files after switching to a new version of QuickBooks Desktop.

Let me know if you have more questions by leaving a comment again. Wishing you all the best!

Hi AlexV,

I just want to clarify a few things before I go forward with the steps you provided.

My new version of QB Desktop Pro 2021 is on a new PC that I just purchased. My previous version of QB Desktop 2009 was an old PC (that I still have).

Here are my questions:

1. I am working with company files for this process (QBW) and not backups files (QBB), correct?

2. Using my old PC, start up QB Desktop 2009 and run the rebuild tool for both company files? Transfer these upgraded company files (QBW) to an external drive to run on new PC.

3.  Using my new PC, move the upgraded QBW files from external drive to PC. Run the through the steps you listed below to "Open or Restore Company" to upgrade my 2009 company file to a 2021 company file.

4. If this process doesn't work, what are my steps to resolve this?

Thank you

Thank you for reaching back out, danny3301. Although you could do the steps, as my colleague mentioned, you would most likely receive an error again since you are converting from 2009 to 2021. I recommend that you contact our Support Team, to have your case escalated to Data Services. Data Services will be able to convert your file to the newest version of QuickBooks Desktop. They will provide the necessary instructions on uploading your company file(s) and retrieving it once the process is completed. Here's how to connect with us:

  1. Go to the Help menu, then click Quickbooks Desktop Help or press the F1 key.
  2. Hit the Contact Us button, as seen in the display.
  3. Enter a brief description of the problem.
  4. Select Continue and choose the callback feature.

Please let me know if there you have any more questions or need clarification. I'll be around. Take care and be safe.
