Buy nowUsing QuickBooks Desktop Pro 2020, with a single user (me) in Admin role. Everything fine until today. Close QB program to reboot PC, and then tried to open previous company file. The password that I’ve used for 10+ years is suddenly no longer valid (or I somehow accidentally change the stored password in my password file).
When I click on the “I forgot my password” link on the log in screen, I get the following message::
“QuickBooks can’t start password reset. Try again in sometime”
I’ve tried waiting four hours for any “cool down” timers to expire, but no luck. I also cannot open the most recent backup file, as I get the same error message.
Even if I accidentally recorded the wrong password (and thus have reset the cool down timers), I’m concerned that I may have no way of getting access to the data in the current company file.
For the record, I’ve never gotten to the screen asking me to “submit your email address and license number, etc.”, so I think that the error is (possibly?) a corrupted password reading in the main QB programs. However, I have not been able to scan the program files, so I don’t know if that is the cause.
Any suggestions (including services that Intuit could provide to reset or eliminate the Admin password) would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Hi there, raycoxe. Since the 2020 version isn't supported anymore, the Automated Password Reset Tool and the I forgot my password link in the software often have trouble connecting to Intuit’s servers. These features need a good connection to confirm who you are and send a reset link to your email.
To explore other options, I recommend reaching out to our Live Support Team. They can access your account in a secure environment and assist in resetting or removing your Admin password.

Install the trial version of QB Desktop 2021 to isolate the problem. If you encounter the same problem, you can purchase a 3rd party service to reset your Admin password.
