Make a new duplicate file with all my data

Good morning! I have a company file that gives me an error every time I run my payroll setup. I run the rebuild, it shows no issues, and I am at a loss. Is there a way, I can make a new file with all my data? I don't know if this will solve my problem or not, but I thought I would give it a try.

Make a new duplicate file with all my data

Hello there, @csmith24.

I'd be happy to help you identify what has caused the error when setting up your payroll.

Let's begin with knowing the error message, you can share it in the comment section. This will give us a hint on the best troubleshooting steps to do before moving into the next step which is the verify and rebuild process. Then, creating a duplicate data copy of the company file.

As of now, please make sure that the Payroll Service Key is active, you can check it on CAMPS. Once, you've logged in, check the QuickBooks Desktop box in the Products & Services list. Then, select Details so that you'll see if the Payroll service has been activated and also see the following information to confirm the correct EIN:

  • License and product number.
  • User limit.
  • Payroll service key, EIN, subscription number, and other payroll subscription details
  • Product edition and version info.
  • What's included in your Care plan.

I've also added this article to know more about the process: Activate QuickBooks Desktop Payroll.

After verifying the payroll service if it has been activated, you can proceed to export the data file using Intuit Interchange Format (IIF) extension to create a duplicate company data file. Here's how to do that:

  1. Go to the File menu and select Utilities.
  2. Select Export, then select Lists to IIF Files.
  3. Check the lists you want to export, then click OK.
  4. In the Save in the dropdown, select a location to save your IIF file into.
  5. Input the file name, then select Save. This is how it looks like:

Once done, set up the duplicate company and import the IIF file. You can check this article to know how to import it: Export, import, and edit IIF files.

I've included this reference page in case you want to know more about the troubleshooting steps you can do if you're still not able to finish setting up the payroll in the duplicate company file: Fix data damage on your QuickBooks Desktop company file.

I'll be on the lookout for updates on this process. Feel free to let me know if you need further assistance or if you have other questions. It would be my pleasure to help you succeed.
