Re: migrating from previous version

Thanks for your quick response, DanFair67.

I can point you in the right direction about restoring a company file to a newer version of QuickBooks Desktop and operating system.

You can upgrade your file to a newer version of QuickBooks, but you can't use the upgraded file in the older version. This means that you should be able to restore the company file from QuickBooks 2016 to QuickBooks 2019 on a Windows 10 computer.

As previously stated by my peers above, when opening a company file in a newer version, QuickBooks asks if you want to upgrade or convert the QuickBooks company file. With that said, you can update and convert an older QuickBooks file, such as from 2016 to 2019.

For the complete details, take a look at this article: Company file compatibility with QuickBooks Desktop when upgrading.

This information should answer your concern.

Please update me as to how things go. Rest assured, I'll still be here to help you out! Best regards.

Re: migrating from previous version

hi @DanFair67 ,

Your data from an earlier version of QuickBooks will update automatically the first time you open the company file in a new version of QuickBooks. Before doing so, QuickBooks automatically backs up the company file in its current version format so you can revert back to the previous version of QuickBooks if you need to.

Please keep in mind, you couldn't downgrade any QBW of Enterprise edition to Pro/Premier automatically. Please notify us should you need any help.

Re: migrating from previous version

Hello there, DanFair67.

I'm glad you reach out to us about your concern with migrating QuickBooks Desktop from the previous version. Let's get this sorted out.

I agree with Fiat Lux. QuickBooks automatically updates the moment you open the company file in a new QuickBooks version.

If you're done installing your new QuickBooks Desktop version, you can start preparing your QuickBooks file for update. Before doing this, make sure to save a backup copy of your company file on a flash drive and restore it to your computer.

Once done, you can start updating your QuickBooks company file. I'd be happy to share with you the steps on how to do it:

  1. Go to the File menu.
  2. Select Open or Restore Company.
  3. Select Open a company file or Restore a backup copy, then Next.
  4. Find and select your company file, then click Open.
  5. Log in as the company admin.
  6. QuickBooks lets you know that it needs to update your company file. Select Update Now to proceed.
  7. Select Done.

Here's an article to learn more about upgrading QuickBooks Desktop to the latest version: Upgrade to a new QuickBooks Desktop version.

That should point you to the right direction. Let me know if you need more assistance with migrating QuickBooks Desktop. I'm always here to offer help.

Re: migrating from previous version

I am going to install the QB 2019 on a new computer that does not have QB on it now. Will I just be able to back up QB 2016 company from the old computer and install on the new computer? The new computer is Windows 10 while the old computer is windows 7
