Our Mileage Tracking feature is currently available for QuickBooks Self-Employed users. In QuickBooks Online, here's how to do it manually.
Set up an employee/vendor:
Select New vendor.
Enter the vendor info, then select Save.
Set up an expense account for mileage:
In the left navigation tab, select Accounting.
On the Chart of Account page, click on New.
Set up the Expense account details, then select Finish.
Set up a Product/Service item for mileage:
In the left navigation tab, select Sales.
Choose Products and Services.
Choose Non-inventory or Service.
You can name the item "Mileage."
In the Sales information section, check I sell this product/service to my customers.
In the Purchasing information section, check I purchase this product/service from a vendor.
Enter a description and the cost you pay per mile.
Assign the mileage expense account you just created.
Select Save and Close.
Enter bills to track mileage:
Select the Plus icon (+).
Under Vendors, select Bill.
Scroll down to Item details.
Select the Mileage item in the Product/Service column. The description and amount will auto-fill along with the rate you chose when you set up the mileage item. Enter the amount.
Click on Save and close.
Please let us know if you need anything else. Thanks!
Mileage is NOT an expense during the year
Mileage is a tax time ONLY election
Your directions need to be deleted, they will just mess up any users financial documents who reads it and follows your advice
Thanks for the call out.
The steps I've provided above are based from our Help Article. Let me share that with you: How To Track Mileage.
Your additional information is a great help for our customers.
Well first if you have an article that spells out what to do, it seems a waste to copy and paste
and the article is wrong, as is your post - just because intuit posts a how to does not mean it is right. Perhaps the concept of what this article is telling folks to do should be run by a tax accountant - intuit has a whole passel of them on staff.
Again, this procedure is posting expenses that you do not have, this is a tax time only expense and only if you elect to use it in place of actual expenses.
Thanks for the follow-up, @Rustler.
I'll take note of it and update the post. I'll also send feedback for this article. This way, the team that handles our help articles will get updated.
You're awesome! Have a good day.
OP Question: Mileage Tracking In QBO Essentials
"Select the Mileage item in the Product/Service column."
Also, there is no "Product/Service" (Item details) column in the Essentials plan (or Simple Start). It's available only in Plus and Advanced.
