Multi- USer

Good afternoon,

I would like someone to help me with my multi- user issue. I get the h505 error, I follow the instructions to fix it and then it works but it's not permanent.

It works for a few days and then stops working again.

How do I get it to work permanently?

Allow me to grab this opportunity to help and get back to your business, @JM76.

I got some steps we can perform to isolate this. Before we proceed, ensure your QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) software is updated to the latest release. This way, we can guarantee it's up to date with the latest features and fixes.

Once done, I recommend downloading our QuickBooks Tools Hub to permanently fix this. Let me guide you how:

  1. Close your QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) software.
  2. Download our QuickBooks Tool Hub.
  3. Save the file where you can easily find it.
  4. Open the file you downloaded (QuickBooksToolHub.exe).
  5. Follow the on-screen steps to install it.
  6. When the install finishes, double-click the icon to open the tool, then select Network Issues.
  7. Click QuickBooks Database Server Manager
  8. Select Start Scan. If your company file folder(s) doesn't, click Browse to locate your company file and then select Start Scan.
  9. When the scan finishes, select Close, then switch to Multi-user Mode

I'm not giving up on this issue, and I've got some further troubleshooting to help you, @JM76.

To start, let's configure your multi-user default settings. Here's how:

  1. Go to Files and click Utilities.
  2. Choose Host Multi-user Access.
  3. Next, add the desired number of users with the company file.

Another solution is to uninstall the program to configure the setup and reinstall it. Here's how:

  1. Select Start and go to the Control Panel.
  2. Choose Programs and Features or Uninstall a Program.
  3. From the list of installed programs, select the version of QuickBooks Desktop you're having problems with.
  4. Hit Uninstall/Change and then Remove and then Next.
  5. When finished, Install QuickBooks Desktop on your server computer.
  6. Pick Custom and Network install for the install type.
  7. Tap I'll be using QuickBooks Desktop on this computer, AND I'll be storing (if you want the full version of QuickBooks Desktop on your server computer) or select I will NOT be using QuickBooks Desktop on this computer (if you just want your server computer to host your files).
  8. Follow the on-screen instructions to finish the install.

Once done, install Database Server Manager on your server computer.

Then, turn on Multi-user Access on your server computer. This should be the only computer with this feature turned on:

  1. Go to the File menu and hover over Utilities.
  2. Hit Host Multi-User Access.
  3. Select Yes.

To access your multi-user network, log in as a user with admin rights on your server computer and workstations.

However, if the issue persists, I recommend reaching out to our technical support team. They use specific tools to do a screen sharing to check your multi-user setup and give you the steps you need to do. To connect with them, refer to these steps:

  1. Go to the Help menu and select QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  2. Click Contact us.
  3. From the Tell us more about your question: box, enter Multiuser stopped working and then Search.
  4. Choose either Call us or Start a message

Also, to make your QuickBooks experience more meaningful, you might want to visit our help page to browse articles that can guide you with your accounting tasks. To get started head to our QBDT help articles at this link.
